Nilanjana sat on the edge of the bed, her heart racing beneath the veil that draped over her head.
The soft fabric brushed against her skin, a tangible reminder of the reality she still struggled to comprehend—she was now married to Gaurav.
The thought made her insides twist with a mixture of disbelief and nervous excitement.
She was his wife, a role she had never imagined for herself, especially not with someone like him.
Her thoughts drifted back to the events of the past week, replaying them in her mind as if trying to convince herself it had all truly happened.
It had been just a week ago when Gaurav had come to her house, his presence commanding yet gentle, and told her parents that he wanted to marry her.
The shock that rippled through the room was palpable, and she had felt numb, unable to process what was happening.
Her father had been the first to speak, questioning if this was some sort of joke, but Gaurav had responded with a calm assurance that left no room for doubt—he genuinely liked her and wanted to marry her.
Her mother had been incredulous, reminding Gaurav that Nilanjana was a divorcee and six years older than him.
She had watched him closely, expecting hesitation, but instead, he had smiled, seemingly unfazed by these facts.
He had affirmed that he wanted to marry her, and only her.
But her mother, still not convinced, had revealed the most painful truth of all—the reason for Nilanjana's divorce. "Nilanjana won't be able to conceive. She's infertile," her mother had said, her voice heavy with sorrow.
The words hung in the air, and for a moment, Gaurav had been silent, clearly taken aback.
Nilanjana had braced herself for his rejection, for the inevitable look of pity or regret.
But Gaurav had surprised her once again.
He had composed himself and said, with a steadiness that brought tears to her eyes, "I don't have any problem with that. I still want to marry her."
His words had shaken her to her core.
She couldn't believe what she was hearing, and the emotions she had kept buried for so long finally spilled over as she cried, unable to fully grasp why someone like Gaurav would want to marry her despite everything.
Her parents had looked at each other, a glimmer of hope in their eyes that she hadn't seen in years.
Her father had asked if Gaurav's family would agree to the marriage, considering all the circumstances.
Gaurav had assured them that his family would have no objections, and the very next day, he had proven true to his word.
Gaurav's family had come to meet her, and to Nilanjana's amazement, they had accepted her wholeheartedly.
They had no issues with her being infertile, and they made it clear that they believed she was strong and deserving of happiness.
Gaurav's sister-in-law, Gauri, had been especially warm and comforting, her presence soothing Nilanjana's anxieties.
She had also met Gaurav's nephew, Veer, a little bundle of joy who had instantly taken to her, clinging to her with a childish affection that made her heart swell.
For the first time in a long while, she had felt a sense of belonging, a flicker of happiness she hadn't dared to hope for.
And now, just one week later, here she was, in Gaurav's house, in his room, sitting on his bed, waiting for him to join her.
