Yuno sat on the worn wooden steps of the church, his small frame silhouetted against the fading sunlight. The golden rays danced through the glass, casting colourful patterns on the ground. Despite the warmth surrounding him, an inexplicable chill settled in his chest, a familiar ache that had accompanied him for as long as he could remember.
He often found himself staring off into the distance, his yellow eyes searching the horizon as if expecting someone to appear, he did this frequently. This feeling—the persistent sense of missing something or someone—was a shadow that lingered just out of reach. It was as if a part of him was meant to be whole, yet remained forever fragmented.
Vague memories flitted through his mind like the flutter of a butterfly's wings: fleeting images of a young girl with black hair and bright blue eyes that would match the moon glowing in the night. She would smile at him, her laughter ringing like a melody, and call him 'her little star'. Yuno didn't understand who she was, but the name resonated deep within him, stirring emotions he couldn't quite articulate. There was a warmth in her voice, a sense of safety that enveloped him, yet it always slipped away before he could grasp it fully.
He often dreamed of her, though the dreams were hazy and blurred, like old paintings left to fade. In those dreams, she would cress his cheek with such love and care, and he would lean into the warmth of her hand but just as he would grasp it, she would dissolve into a mist. Each time he woke up, the hollowness in his heart deepened, and he would sit up, feeling more alone than ever with tears in his eyes.
Yuno would sometimes ask Sister Lilly and Father Orsi about families and siblings, trying to piece together why he felt this emptiness. They would smile gently, their eyes filled with pity, and tell him that families came in many forms. But Yuno couldn't shake the feeling that there was someone out there—someone who was meant to be with him.
As he wandered the village, he would often imagine what she might be like. Would she be brave? Would she be kind, the same kindness he felt when he looked up at the night sky and when the stars would shine brightly for him? He would often gaze at the stars, whispering his hopes into the night, convinced that she could hear him. "I'm here," he would say softly. "I'm waiting for you."
It was late into the night as Yuno laid in bed, the only sound heard was Asta's loud snores, the moonlight filtering through the window cast gentle shadows across the room. With his eyes closed, he often dreamed of a different life—a life where he stood tall among the powerful, where his name echoed throughout the Clover Kingdom in awe. The dream of becoming the Wizard King was more than just a title; it was a promise to himself and to those like him.
In his mind, he envisioned the day he would receive the honour of the title, the weight of responsibility resting comfortably on his shoulders. He would be the strongest, not just for himself, but for the countless orphans and commoners who felt invisible in a world dominated by nobility and power. He imagined Asta by his side, loud and energetic as ever, cheering him on as his best friend and rival. Together, they would change the world, proving that strength wasn't determined by bloodlines but by the courage to fight for what was right.
