A/N: Kinda long chapter.
Sevyn leaned over the counter, her eyes glued to the paperwork scattered in front of her. She scribbled notes for the girl's upcoming tennis tournament. This would be their first tournament.
Outside, the echo of distant laughter and the occasional thwack of a ball against a racquet wafted through the open window. It was a sound that had become a comforting rhythm to her as she did her work.
Lando strolled in, the excitement he had to see what Sevyn had been working on, "Hey Coach."
She looked up, her eyes lighting up at the sight of him. "Hey, you're here!" she exclaimed, standing to give him a hug and a kiss.
"Of course," he said, returning the hug with a squeeze. "You've been so caught up in this project, that I had to come see it for myself." He surveyed the room, noticing the rows of rackets lined up neatly against the wall and the brightly colored posters of Serena Williams, Venus Williams to Althea Gibson serving as inspiration. "It looks amazing," he said genuinely.
Sevyn beamed with pride. "Thanks," she replied, "I'm not taking you away from anything am I?"
"Just my final portfolio for my photography class but I needed a break it's been stressing me out," Lando said with a sigh making Sevyn rub his back.
"What's the theme?"
"Joy in the community." Lando told her, "But the T.A. said that my photos lack emotion and depth."
"Well, maybe you'll find it today," Sevyn said before she gestured towards the court. "Want to see the future champions in action?"
"Hell yeah," Lando said as they separated.
The couple walked outside, the heat of the day giving way to a gentle breeze. On the tennis courts, a group of young black girls ranging from ages six to fifteen were scattered, each with their rackets and balls.
They were all dressed in their new team uniforms, the white and maroon stripes standing out against their dark skin. Some were practicing serves, others playing mini-games of doubles, and a few were receiving one-on-one coaching from Sevyn's assistant coaches.
The moment the girls saw Sevyn, they squealed with excitement, dropping their rackets and rushing over.
"Coach Sevyn!" they chorused, jumping up and down.
Lando took a step back, watching with an amused smile as Sevyn was engulfed in a sea of eager faces and outstretched arms he took his chance to snap a few pictures with his camera. Sevyn greeted each one with a high five or a fist bump, her eyes shining with the joy of their shared passion.
Sevyn turned to Lando, her grin unwavering. "This is my boyfriend, Lando," she announced, her voice carrying over the group. The girls giggled and whispered among themselves, their curiosity piqued.
