The Walker screamed into her bubble of air. The skeletal fingers of a body had closed on his wrist. No matter how much she tried to free herself, kicked, hit the corpse, he clung to her like a mussel to its rock.
Pain. A deceased man had sunk his teeth into her calf to hold her back.
"It's your fault!" they chanted in unison, a chorus of voices from beyond the grave. Stay with us forever!
Little by little, all the dead came to life and grabbed Lauren. As she was about to call upon her power to repel them, a golden glow in the dark waters caught her eye.
Everything froze.
Then the dead moved backwards, making incomprehensible sounds. Lauren's body began to rise, slowly but surely, to the surface. She wanted to clap her feet and hands to speed up, but her body refused to obey her.
The light she had created went out, leaving her alone in the terrifying darkness. The Walker knew that the bodies were there, but could no longer see them. In a way, it was even more nerve-wracking.
His ascent suddenly stopped. A long, agonizing minute passed, during which Lauren tried to understand.
Then, little by little, sprays of water entered her lungs, faster and faster – and in a flash of lucidity, the Walker understood.
Lys was going back in time and dragging him along with her.
The air bubble disappeared, and the girl sank upside down into the waves, so that she was moving faster and faster towards the surface. The water was expelled from her body, and then she flew into the air, out of control.
She lands on a pontoon bathed in the light of the moon. The skies spewed out torrents of water on the immense dark lake that stretched as far as the eye could see. The course of time had returned to normal, so that Lauren could turn around. At the land end of the pontoon stood a sinister mansion bordered by a thick forest. Lightning flashed intermittently brightly, casting monstrous shadows.
The Walker did not see Lys. It wasn't normal. Where was she?
Sobs attracted his attention. A human form, curled up in the fetal position, was crying loudly. Lauren didn't go near it. Something was wrong with this dream. She had gone back in time! And she had failed to use her power at that time.
It had gone on too long. She had to return to the real world – after all, the goal of the course was simply to get into the mind. She had already succeeded.
But Lauren could not leave the reverie.
Still, she was in a dream. It was his domain! She was a Walker, and as such, she was able to intrude into dreams and take control of them.
Nothing to do. Lauren could force her gift, but it was impossible to get out of the dream of any kind.
She was trapped in Lys's nightmare.
