Physics was Magnolia's least favorite class. Her deep red nails tapped on the desk, studying the way her teacher behaved rather than the words that were coming out of her mouth. It was sad, really, for the woman's life to have come to living off of a lame salary and teaching in some stale classroom in a tired town. Ms. Lynn droned on and on, but Magnolia couldn't bring herself to pay attention. The whole class was just so dull. Which would've made the class good to sleep through, had Steve Harrington, king of Hawkins High, not been assigned to sit next to her. Usually he was too busy throwing wads of crumpled up paper towards Tommy H., who sat in the front of the room, to pay any mind to her. Not that he would anyway, she thought.
"Hey," a whisper came from her right. Never mind.
Magnolia tried to ignore him, pretending to have not heard, until he tried again. She turned to meet his wide eyes with a blank expression.
His face had some sort of reaction to her, she couldn't tell what it had meant though.
"Did you do the homework?" he asked, maintaining his hushed tone.
She nodded.
"Well, can I see it?" he said with slight urgency, he was getting impatient. Magnolia found it hilarious.
"Five bucks."
"What?"
"If you give me five bucks," she explained with shrug. He looked at her like she was insane. "Aren't you supposed to be loaded, or something?" she pointed out.
A muttered, "Bitch," came from his mouth as he turned to face forward.
Magnolia rolled her eyes at his attitude. It was like jocks thought they were the only ones who could make jokes. She could see now why Talia had told her to stay away from him; he was an asshole.
