November 3, 1984

Magnolia huffed as she pulled at the strap of her helmet. While she had been laying down the trail of bologna, leading from Dustin's room to the shed, Dustin was grabbing their "armor". Selfishly, Dustin took the hockey gear for himself and left his older cousin with knee and elbow pads and his bike helmet.

She paused her fidgeting when he finally saw Dustin waddle through the back door.

"Shit, shit, shit, shit," she heard him repeat as he got closer.

"Language," she scolded. "Is it working?"

The boy just continued to hop past her and into the shed.

"Fuck, Dusty, is it working?" she asked, more impatiently now.

"I don't know just get in here!" he hissed.

The girl rolled her eyes and closed the shed door behind her. The two peeked through the cracks of the walls and gasped when Dart finally appeared. Their eyes trailed along as Dart followed the path of meat up until he was right in front of the cellar. Pausing his movements, Dart looked in the direction of the shed.

Magnolia's heartbeat picked up and Dustin jumped back.

"Shit," they both cursed, and Magnolia sent Dustin a glare.

Magnolia watched as the creature crept closer in curiosity. She racked her brain for an idea that didn't involve killing her cousin's pet Demogorgon right in front of him. Then, she noticed Dustin stand up straighter and his breathing picked up.

Without warning, the young boy shot through the door, almost hitting her, and let out a war cry as he smacked Dart straight into the cellar. Running over, Magnolia helped Dustin keep the metal doors shut long enough for him to lock them. Dart screeched from within and the sound brought chills down her spine.

"I'm sorry. You ate my cat," Dustin panted.

"Guys, this is Dustin, again. Does anyone copy? This is a code red. I repeat, a code red!" Dustin shouted into his headset.

Magnolia wiped away the sweat on her forehead as she stuck the shovel into the dirt again. "Okay, can you quit yelling into that thing and help me for a second?" she sighed.

Dustin had been trying to reach someone for the past thirty minutes, but no one was answering. The cousins knew that as capable as they were, taking on a Demogorgon on their own wasn't possible. So, they were stuck cleaning up the house as they waited for someone to respond.

Another twenty minutes had passed, but still no reply. Dustin dug through cabinets for cleaning supplies while Magnolia was in his room moving the chair Mews was killed behind so they could clean the stain. Walking into the room, arms filled with various bottles, Dustin huffed.

"Still nothing?" Magnolia questioned.

"It's like everyone dropped off the face of the planet!"

"Well, maybe, that thing will just die if we keep it in there long enough."

Dustin squinted and shook his head at the idea. He grabbed a brush and some soap and started scrubbing the carpet. Magnolia sat on the chair and focused on the stain on its cushion instead.

"Alright, it's Dustin again," her cousin began, "Seriously, I have a code red." After a minute of silence, he spoke up again. "Erica? Erica, is Lucas there? Where is he?"

To this, Magnolia's eyes shot up. Finally.

"Is he with Mike?... Please tell him it's super important. Please tell him that I have a code– Yep, a code red. Exactly... Erica?"

"What happened?" Magnolia asked tentatively.

Pulling off his headset, Dustin sighed. "Everybody's gone."

"Okay, well how about you just go get someone? If Lucas isn't home, try Mike's. If he isn't home, see if Nancy is. I heard she left town, but maybe she's back. I'll clean up here."

Nodding, the boy put his headset back on and rushed outside to go find help.
