November 11, 1983

"Jonathan!"

Nancy's cries repeated like a chant. Her voice sounded so close, and yet still far away.

"Nancy?" Magnolia yelled into the murky air. She finally spotted Jonathan through the thick trees, and slowly approached him.

"Nancy!" she heard him yell again.

Before she could join him, she stopped. Thick slime coated some sort of opening in a tree, an opening that didn't reach the other side. Magnolia studied it, reaching out her hand to touch it. Disgusting.

"Jonathan, where are you?" Nancy's voice felt louder now.

"Jonathan... you should come check this out" Magnolia called out wearily. He hadn't heard her over his own yelling, so with a quick glance back, she peeled off her penny lane coat, dropped it next to her backpack, then started climbing in.

Magnolia closed her eyes and refrained from gagging as she felt the slime coat her hair and clothing. If Nancy wasn't in here she was going to kill her. Once she finally seemed to break free from it, she opened her eyes to the same place she had just left. She stood, shivering as she took a better look. This place was a lot darker, and dust seemed to fly around, and it was cold. Very cold.

"Nancy?" Magnolia called out.

Magnolia heard the girl's scream in response.

"Nancy!" she now yelled out in more urgency. She looked around, searching for any sign of the brunette, when she was pushed to the ground. She felt the oxygen leave her throat for a minute as she made contact with the dirt floor.

"Be quiet," a harsh voice whispered from above her.

Magnolia quickly turned around, "Holy shit, Nance, I thought I was about to die."

Nancy quickly pulled her up, dragging her towards a tree. The look in the girl's face scared Magnolia. She'd never seen someone more terrified.

"You have to be quiet," Nancy said in a low tone.

Magnolia slowly nodded. She was confused, but complied. She knew not to question someone with eyes so wide they looked like they were about to pop out.

Then, Magnolia heard it. A low growl sounded behind them. Her eyes snapped towards Nancy who had her eyes screwed shut. Magnolia dared to take a glance at what was making the noise. As soon as her eyes met with the gray, slimy skin of the monster, she turned back around. Magnolia's breath quickened. She was going to die. They were going to die. So much for trying to be a hero. Maybe in her next life she would learn to decline offers to search for inter-dimensional creatures.

"Nancy, Magnolia! Follow my voice!"

The girls turned to face the source of Jonathan's echoing voice. It was the slimy portal.

Jonathan approached the hole in the tree wearily.

"Nancy?" he called out again.

A hand abruptly protruded through the slime, sending the boy back.

"Jonathan!"

Once he finally registered that this was the girl he had been looking for, Jonathan quickly grabbed a hold of her hand, pulling her back to him with great difficulty. As she was finally freed, she fell on top of him. The two stayed there for a moment hugging each other.

Nancy finally raised her head from his shoulder, "Magnolia," she reminded him

Said girl's hands clawed at the bark of the tree as she tried to pull herself out. The teens grabbed her hands, pulling her quicker than Jonathan had managed with Nancy.

Magnolia felt herself hit the ground for the second time that night. She had never felt so glad to be in Hawkins. All three of them sat in silence, trying to process everything that had just happened. Magnolia reached for her penny lane coat, shoving it in her bag. There was no way in hell she was going to put it on while she was covered in goo. Maybe the cold breeze biting at her exposed skin would distract from the throbbing cut on her ankle.
