Her skin felt dry and stiff. She had spent the past two hours crying. Magnolia didn't want to break up with him. She had depended on his love for so long, but now she had to leave, and there was no way they could be together. Her father had stripped away the life she had created —every single bit of it.
Magnolia couldn't blame Marty Liams for getting upset. She could, however, blame Marty Liams for being a dick. Magnolia liked Marty because he was sweet and kind, but above all, he was like her. So, he was also an immature asshole at times. Breaking up with Marty a week before she moved across the country wasn't a great move, but when Marty talked about how he knew she'd "pull some shit like this"... that was worse.

"I hate your dad," Chrissy said with her face buried into Magnolia's shoulder. "He's an asshole."
"Yeah, I've had to live with him my whole life," Magnolia tried to laugh. Danny's hand on her shoulder was meant to be comforting, but it only made her feel like she would break at any second. "You guys are really cool friends," she muttered.
The three stood in silence for a minute.
"Come back, alright?" Chrissy now pulled away and the two girls stared at one another. "As soon as you graduate, come back."
Magnolia nodded, "I will."
"Yeah, come on, you can't keep Mags away from the ocean," Danny smiled.
Chrissy seemed deflected. How could she ever doubt her best friend? Finally, she held out her pinky, "Promise."
With a roll of her eyes, Magnolia finalized the pinky promise, pushing away the unsettled feeling in her stomach.
