"So, I forgot to ask... how were things with Billy last night?" Talia questioned Magnolia with a smirk as they walked down the hallway. "I heard you guys were rubbing up all over each other," she adds, bumping into her friend's shoulder.
Magnolia rolled her eyes, "Okay, ew. You did not have to say it like that. Also, what do you mean 'you heard'?"
"People talk Maggie. Especially about the new, hot guy and his girlfriend," she shrugged.
Magnolia scoffed. "We are not dating."
"Did things really go that bad?"
' "No," she sighed, "but, I just feel dumb. I mean I said I wouldn't get involved with him, and you said I would... and you were right–"
"I'm always right." Talia winced at the glare Magnolia gave her. "Sorry, continue."
"I guess, I just wish I didn't do this to myself all the time. It's like I'm blatantly trying to get myself hurt and I'm so tired of being disappointed."
Talia stopped walking now, forcing Magnolia to stop and look at her. "Magnolia, you are not predictable. I mean, you have a bad habit of being with less-than-mediocre guys... but that does not make you predictable. You can drop him, I know you can. You do it with almost every guy. If you really think he's an asshole, do it, but I'm just saying that maybe he could be different. You think you're cursed, but you're not. Just have fun, alright? Things don't always have to work out."
Magnolia stood in silence for a minute. She knew Talia could be genuine when she wanted to, but it was so rare for such behavior to be directed towards her. Knowing her words would fail her, Magnolia pulled Talia in for a hug.
It never failed to surprise her how close she had become with Talia within such a short time. Still, she was hesitant to use the term 'best friend'. Somehow, it felt like a snub to Chrissy. It was like she was living a double life. Magnolia hadn't mentioned her life back home in detail to anyone, but home haunted her every day. How would things be when she went back?... If she went back?

Magnolia awkwardly stood near the gym doors. She had left Talia some time ago, after agreeing to give things a shot with Billy. She was hopeful that he'd be like the boys back in California; the boys who were fun before they became outright douchebags. Before the team had disappeared into the locker rooms they had been playing a scrimmage: shirts vs. skins. Magnolia was grateful she had gotten there in time to see the very shirtless, very sweaty, Billy beat Harrington's ass. And, God, when he finally made eye contact with her, she couldn't help but feel her heart skip. Maybe dating Billy Hargrove wouldn't be terrible.
"Hey," her thoughts were interrupted by the man she had just been daydreaming about.
Magnolia turned to him with a small smile. "Hey. You looked like you were winning out there."
"I always am, baby," he replied with a smirk.
She rolled her eyes but couldn't wipe the smile from her face. This was probably a trap, and she knew she was falling right into it. "Sorry for leaving so quickly last night, it was stupid. I was... nervous, I guess. I did have a good time, though."
"Yeah? So did I." Slowly, the rest of the team began to exit the locker room. He glanced back at them, "Maybe, I can take you out sometime?"
Magnolia bit her lip, sheepishly, and nodded, "Yeah."
With little warning, the boy captured her lips in a short kiss, before walking out of the gym. The smile that had been on her lips in his presence slowly fell as she exited through the same door he did. She had forgotten how performative high school relationships were. The time that they were together satisfied her, and she desperately craved that feeling since her breakup. Maybe dating Billy Hargrove wouldn't be terrible.

"Hey, Dusty–" Magnolia impatiently pulled at the handle of her younger cousin's room. "Why the hell is your door locked?" the girl questioned immediately. She knew of the mother and son's close bond, there was no reason to hide anything from each other, and there was definitely no reason to lock the door.
"Uh, I'm changing!" he yelled, his voice muffled by the sliding door.
Well, except that she thought. "Okay, but hurry. Dinner's ready."
Claudia had made her notorious mac n' cheese, a delicacy that Magnolia wasn't familiar with unless it came from a cardboard box shoved in the back of her pantry. Family dinners were a concept she had grown to like the most during her stay there. She hadn't remembered a single time her father had sat down to eat a meal with her past the age of five. Maybe it was for the better though, because whenever her dad did decide to cook something, she'd end up having to throw the disgusting dish away.
When Dustin finally joined the two, Magnolia squinted at him. He was wearing the same clothes as earlier. Dustin Henderson was hiding something, and she was going to find out what.
