Everything felt weird. Ever since Halloween night, Magnolia had a feeling in her gut that something was wrong with Hawkins. Her cousin had some secret, Nancy and Jonathan had gone MIA, and above everything else, Magnolia didn't know what to make of herself anymore.
Back in California, life was different. She had a long-term boyfriend, amazing friends, and hobbies—the only cons were her father and her lack of success regarding anything academic. She wanted to go back to the way life was before the monsters and the messy relationships. She wanted to go back to California. But she couldn't. As much as she missed her past, that was all it would be. If she went back to California, she wouldn't have that boyfriend, and those friends would have likely moved on, and those hobbies would be difficult to pick up once again. Then there was still her dad. Why hadn't he just been there for her?
It didn't take much for Magnolia to get lost in "what-ifs" anymore. This morning, all it took was a glance at the box of photos and memorabilia she had shoved into the back of her closet. It sucked her in a trapped her in its unforgiving grasp.
Dustin walked into Magnolia's room. "Talia's here–" he paused when he saw his cousin's frame hunched over an old box. He'd seen it before and he knew its effects on the girl. He knelt by her now, looking at the picture she held: it was a group of four teens, surrounding a bonfire on a beach. "You okay?" he asked softly.
Magnolia quickly wiped away a fresh tear. "I'm fine," she muttered, tossing the photo back in the box, "I don't know what I'm doing." She pushed the box back into her closet and covered it with a couple of jackets that had been lying on her floor. "Can you go tell Talia I'll be out there in five minutes?" the girl requested, not daring to look at her cousin directly. Thankfully, he had done exactly what she asked.
Magnolia was not a stranger to embarrassment, but she felt a new level of humiliation. She was pathetic.

"Mew-Mews!" Claudia called for the fifth time in a row. She shook around the cat's box of food.
Magnolia sighed and watched as her aunt tried incessantly to beckon her beloved cat to return to her. The cat hadn't come running to eat her dinner as she usually did, which sent her aunt into a spiral. "Maybe she's just sleeping somewhere," Magnolia tried to reason.
Her aunt turned to her with worry deeply etched onto her face. "No" she shook her head, "I checked all her usual spots. She wouldn't go anywhere else. Oh, she's lost!" she cried. Burying her head into her niece's shoulder, Claudia wept.
"It's going to be fine, Aunt Claudia. How about we just worry about this tomorrow, okay? Maybe Mews will show up," Magnolia spoke softly, rubbing the woman's back.
With a nod, Claudia wiped a few tears and retreated into her bedroom.
Magnolia huffed and sat on the couch, face buried in her hands. The missing cat, which Magnolia figured had probably got run over by now, would ruin Claudia, and such a sweet person didn't deserve to go through that.
The sound of rustling in her room interrupted Magnolia's thoughts.
With furrowed brows, Magnolia peered inside. She was met with the sight of Dustin pulling a blanket out of her closet. "What're you doing?" she questioned, startling him.
He shrugged, "I'm just going to, uh... watch movies all night. So, I'm sleeping on the couch."
"So why are you taking my blanket?"
"Huh?"
"Why aren't you using your own blanket, Dustin?" she asked, losing patience.
She stared at his blank face, waiting for him to come up with an excuse, but he had nothing. Done with his lies, Magnolia decided to investigate the matter herself. She turned on her heel and went straight for Dustin's door.
"No, no. No!" he called from behind her, but it was too late.
Magnolia's eyes widened and she could feel her stomach churn at the sight of blood spattered across her cousin's room. Her mind ran a mile a minute up until the familiar sight of a certain creature made her pause. There was a fucking Demogorgon in Dustin's room.
Slamming the door back shut, before the monster noticed her, Magnolia faced Dustin.
"What the fuck did you do now?!"
