November 10, 1983

The graphite failed to make contact with the paper in front of her as Magnolia stared at the linoleum floors. She had gone to Barb's house last night, and the girl wasn't there. Talia called the Holland house last night, and her mother hadn't known where she was either. Even Nancy hadn't known. Barbara Holland was missing.

Magnolia's eyes snapped towards the door as it opened, and the principal requested Tommy H.'s presence. She had prayed he had done something horrible and was now getting expelled, but that was wishful thinking. For the first, and probably last time, Magnolia wished to be Tommy H. She would've given anything to get out of that boring, and albeit, useless English class. She couldn't recall a single thing she had learned in the past months.

By the time Magnolia had made it into the confines of her own home, though she still found it difficult to call it that, she needed to be out the door once again to take up another shift at Bradley's Big Buy. Today, she had really been dreading showing up at all. She technically didn't have to show up. Sure, it would seem irresponsible to most, and it would no doubt result in the termination of her employment, but at this point in time, pleasing her father wasn't very high up on her list.

So, when Magnolia spotted Nancy Wheeler hurriedly walking down the street, she had found the perfect excuse to not show up.

"Nancy!" Magnolia yelled out, as she jogged to catch up with the girl who was clearly distressed.

Nancy shot a glance back towards the girl, but made no move to slow down. "Hi," she greeted, breathless. "I'm really trying to get somewhere."

"Yeah, sure," Magnolia brushed off. "So, you still haven't heard from Barb?"

Nancy shook her head, and her determined expression fell.

Magnolia watched her wearily. "Is she missing?" she asked with hesitance.

Nancy stopped abruptly, causing Magnolia to practically run into her. The girls' eyes had a shine on them that wasn't there before. "Do you know something?"

She stared at Nancy with a mix of confusion and shock. "Uh, I mean, Barb wasn't... home last night. I know that."

Nancy looked around, as if whatever she was about to say was confidential. "I think," she whispered, "I think something happened to Barb."

Magnolia shook her head, "What are you talking about?"

"Barb, she went with me to a party at Steve's house-"

"Yeah, so?"

"So, I haven't seen her since then. And I went back to his house yesterday-"

"Who's? Steve's? Why would you-"

"Magnolia," Nancy said with a sense of urgency. "Do you want to know, or not?"

Nodding sheepishly, Magnolia made a motion of zipping her lips.

"Barb's car was still there, and when I checked the backyard I saw this... thing. This man."

"A man?" The note of skepticism was clear in Magnolia's voice.

"Yes, but he didn't have a face." She finished, a look of worry took over her face as she pulled out a picture.

It was taped together, likely one Steve had ripped up in the parking lot. It featured Barb, sitting on a diving board, but in the corner was a figure. It looked alien. It wasn't like anything Magnolia had seen before.
