As time passes, neither Catnap nor Dogday can shake the feeling that something is wrong between them, though neither knows what the other is thinking. Both toys begin to overanalyze every little interaction. One evening, as they sit together, watching the sunset through a crack in the factory wall, Dogday notices Catnap looking away, deep in thought. "Maybe Catnap likes someone else," Dogday thinks sadly. His ears droop. The idea makes his heart sink, but he can't bring himself to ask.On the other side, Catnap notices Dogday's usual enthusiasm is slightly dampened, and it makes him anxious. "Is he avoiding me?" Catnap wonders. "Maybe Dogday's found someone else to spend his time with."The silence between them grows, but neither realizes that their confusion is based on the same misunderstanding—that they both believe the other has feelings for someone else.
