The factory was abuzz with its usual activity, but Dogday had been unusually secretive all morning. Catnap, naturally curious, had been trying to figure out what his companion was up to, but Dogday dodged every question with his usual wagging tail and a mischievous grin.
“Alright, spill it,” Catnap finally demanded as they stood near the conveyor belts. “What are you hiding?”
Dogday’s ears perked, and his grin widened. “You’ll see! Just follow me, Catnap.” He grabbed the cat’s paw and pulled him along, his excitement palpable.
Catnap allowed himself to be led, though he muttered, “If this is another one of your schemes, I’m not bailing you out this time.”
“It’s not a scheme! Just trust me,” Dogday replied, practically bouncing with energy.
After a winding journey through the factory’s hidden corridors, they arrived at a small, cozy nook that Dogday had decorated with twinkling fairy lights and a blanket spread out on the floor. At the center of it all was a makeshift picnic, complete with cookies, a small thermos of hot chocolate, and a tiny vase holding a single daisy.
Catnap blinked, his usually cool demeanor faltering. “You… did all this?”
Dogday’s tail wagged furiously as he nodded. “I know you don’t like big, flashy stuff, so I thought… maybe something small, just for us.”
Catnap was speechless for a moment, his heart fluttering at the thought Dogday had put into the surprise. “This is… really nice,” he said softly, sitting down on the blanket. “You didn’t have to do all this, you know.”
“I wanted to,” Dogday said, settling down beside him. “You’ve been there for me through everything, Catnap. I just wanted to do something special for you.”
Catnap’s tail flicked, and he looked away, trying to hide the warmth spreading across his cheeks. “You’re such a sap.”
Dogday laughed, nudging Catnap playfully. “And you love it.”
“Yeah, yeah,” Catnap muttered, though his small smile gave him away.
As they shared the cookies and sipped hot chocolate, the atmosphere between them was warm and easy. They talked about everything and nothing, their laughter filling the little nook. For Catnap, who was used to keeping his walls up, it felt like the kind of moment he never thought he’d have—a moment of genuine connection.
At one point, Dogday reached out to brush a crumb off Catnap’s cheek, his touch lingering for just a second longer than necessary. Catnap froze, his green eyes meeting Dogday’s golden ones. The world seemed to pause, the hum of the factory fading into the background.
“Catnap,” Dogday said softly, his voice filled with a rare seriousness. “I know I joke around a lot, but… you really mean everything to me.”
Catnap’s ears flicked back, and he felt his chest tighten. He wasn’t great with words, but he knew he couldn’t let the moment pass. “You mean everything to me too,” he admitted, his voice barely above a whisper.
Dogday’s smile was radiant, and without thinking, he leaned in. This time, Catnap didn’t pull away. Their noses brushed, and then their lips met in a kiss that was soft, sweet, and filled with all the feelings they hadn’t yet put into words.
When they pulled away, Dogday’s tail was wagging so hard it shook the blanket beneath them. Catnap chuckled, his usual smirk softening into something more genuine.
“You’re ridiculous,” he said fondly.
“And you love it,” Dogday replied, grinning.
Catnap rolled his eyes but couldn’t hide his smile. “Yeah. I guess I do.”
They spent the rest of the evening in their little nook, wrapped in the warmth of each other’s company and the quiet certainty that, whatever happened, they’d always have each other.
