Sans remembered when he first met Frisk... first met everyone. Everything felt so new, yet so familiar. Memories of things that were there, yet he never quite interacted with. The names of the people around him, yet never having met them. The name of a man that looked similarly to him, yet his instincts told him he was dangerous. He had to be careful around that skeleton, Sparse. Instead, he hung out with Frisk, Chara, Papyrus, and the others, making friends with them. Connecting with them. Sans had fun. Didn't think much of those misplaced memories. Not until his world was overwritten and his memories erased. When he woke up again, there was an offness Sans couldn't place, but upon meeting Frisk for the first time, he pushed it away to be thought about later. Frisk was a good kid. It wasn't long before they became friends. "You know, Asgore is a really good king." Frisk commented, and Sans nodded his agreement. "yeah, heh. it's no wonder everyone likes him." He frowned softly. "except..." Frisk perked up. "Except?" Sans felt his instincts flare up, and he tried to escape, but Sparse was faster. The bones impaled Sans, and Frisk screamed as he turned to dust.

Something was wrong. Sans knew it. He could feel it, deep in his bones. He just couldn't name it. There were memories in his mind that felt fake and made him uncertain. There were memories in his mind that were out of reach. All he knew was that he had to be careful of Sparse. That monster was trouble. Keep smiling, for he always seemed to be watching. Wag your tail when Papyrus talked. He didn't want to make his brother suspicious and get into trouble with him. Sans simply had to play along until he could figure something out. "BROTHER! LOOK AT THIS!" Sans blinked out of his deep thoughts and smiled, giving him a small wag as Papyrus held out a broken locket. "DO YOU THINK THIS CAN BE FIXED, BROTHER?" Papyrus asked hopefully, his tail wagging. "sure, it can," Sans grinned a Cheshire quality grin. "hand it over." Papyrus immediately looked suspicious but handed it over. Sans pulled out string and tape, much to Papyrus utter disappointment. "I Should Have Known, Lazybones..." He shook his head while Sans cackled, his grin practically splitting his face open.

Sans hugged Papyrus close to his little chest while Alphys and Sparse looked down at them. He didn't trust this man before him. His instincts screamed against it. (They also whispered for him to attack. Maim. Kill. Leave nothing behind.) Sans growled wearily, but Sparse only smirked at him and picked him and Papyrus us. The next thing Sans knew, he was living with the skeleton, and he and Papyrus were beginning guard training. Mostly, he was in it for his friend, Frisk. He met them not longer after Sparse adopted him. But another part of it was because of that whisper I the back of his mind. It was only getting louder as he grew older, and he thought if he could learn to control it in guard training, he could use it for good. He could protect others with this destructive instinct rather than get consumed by it. "Sans! Are you listening?" Sans straightened his posture, nodding. "yes, captain." Undyne nodded and went back to explaining the test he and Papyrus were about to take. However, his focus was elsewhere, his claws twitching and his fangs clenched tight in an attempt to keep his control. He couldn't lose it now. This instinct was supposed to be his trump card.

Sans 'woke up' with Frisk below him, blood dripping down their shoulder. "f-frisk...?" He asked shakily. He tasted dust and blood in his mouth. "Heh... heheh... there you are..." Their voice was strained, he knew they were in pain. He knew it was his fault. "It's not... n-not your fault..." Frisk wheezed, as if reading his mind. Sans tried to argue, but they cut him off. "He's controlling you... S-Sans... h-he put those... th-those instincts in you..." Sans felt panic rise in him. HIS BEST FRIEND WAS DYING!!! "frisk! no, no, no! please-" Frisk grabbed his shoulders with shaky limps. "W-we have t-to s-stop h-him...! W-we c-can...... can s-stop........ h-him.......... h-help us............" Frisk rattled out with the last of their strength before the poison took over, leaving Sans helpless to watch. "frisk..." How...? How could he stop someone who had full control over him? Could plant instincts and memories into him as if he were a doll...? Cross felt the world fade to white around him as Frisk reset once more.

The plan was to kill Sparse. Undyne's test was to kill his father. It excited him. It scared him. It made his uncontrollable instincts fight against him and it worried his brother and Undyne alike. "Sans...? Are You Alright?" Papyrus asked nervously as he clutched his skull. Sans growled, but nodded, fighting to stay awake. "m-my part is to steal the soul, right? get it away from father and protect it so noone can get their hands on it?" Undyne nodded uncertainly. "Are you sure your ok to do it? You seem a bit... freaked." Sans nodded stiffly, fisting his hands to his sides. "i can do it." He had to break Sparse's control so he couldn't hurt anyone. Not again. The mission began soon after, with Frisk and Chara leading the battle. Frisk kept eyeing Sans of course. He knew why too. But as he kept hidden from Sparse's sight, the instinct still fought him. As he waited to get the soul, he fought back. Then the time came and he left for his chance. He and Sparse made eye contact as he took it from him... "Kill them." Sans' mind went blank.

Red beaded down his cheek as he looked across the blank expanse of his broken universe. The soul, hidden in his locket as his memories of what happened resurfaced. He only had one goal in mind, now that everything was destroyed.

Rebuild.
