"Emma, wake up, my love! You need to go to school. It's a new year, and you'll be graduating soon. Get up!" My aunt tells me.

I groan and peek at the clock. "Okay, I'll be down in ten minutes."

"I've prepared lunch, I have to leave early today."

"Alright, see you."

I stumble out of bed and head to the bathroom. Third year of high school – what a joy. Grabbing a pair of black leggings and a white top, I throw on a black cardigan for good measure. Shoes on, phone in hand, I head out the door.

There's my best friend, Mia, waiting by the school entrance. A smile spreads across my face as I approach.

"Good morning," she says, handing me a steaming cup of coffee. "Lifesaver."

"Good morning! Thank you," I reply, taking a grateful sip.

As we walk through the school doors, Mia asks, "So, where's our first class?"

I turn toward our usual classroom, but before I can take a step, someone slams into me from behind. Coffee splashes onto my shirt and the floor. I whirl around, startled, to find a scowling boy glaring daggers at me.

"Oh my god, I'm so sorry!" I exclaim, mortified.

His jaw clenches, and his fists clench. "Get away from me now, or I'll make you pay for that!" he shouts, his voice echoing through the hallway. Heads turn, and a hush falls over the crowd.

Mia grabs my arm, pulling me back. "Who was that?" she whispers, eyes wide with concern.

"I have no idea," I reply, equally shaken. "Never seen him before. Do you think he's new?"

"No clue, but whatever his problem is, stay away from him."

We head to our classroom, apprehension twisting in my gut.

The teacher arrives, followed by none other than the coffee-drenched boy. I nudge Mia, who shoots me a panicked look.

"Oh no..." I whisper, my heart sinking.

He spots me and throws me a glare that could curdle milk.

"I think he's looking at you," Mia murmurs. Right now, the only thing I want is to disappear.

Lucas' POV

I walk into class with the teacher, just wanting to grab my books and escape. Lydia's waiting for me, and I'm already late.

Suddenly, I see the girl who spilled coffee on me earlier. Her eyes widen as our gazes meet, and she nudges her friend.

"Scared, little lizard? You should be!" I growl under my breath. I know she's staring at me – can practically feel her eyes burning into my back.

The teacher calls out names to hand out textbooks. I hear him say "Emma" repeatedly. Her friend nudges her, and finally, she walks up, looking like a deer caught in headlights.

"How clumsy can you be?" I mutter, rolling my eyes.

The teacher calls my name next. I grab my books, then glance back at Emma, giving her a death stare that makes her flinch away. A smirk plays on my lips. "Nice to meet you, Emma." Just wait until I have some fun with you.

Emma's POV

The school bell rings, signaling the end of the first period. I hurry out of the classroom, desperate for fresh air.

"Mia, I'm going to the bathroom," I say quickly. "Wait for me outside, and I'll be right back."

The bathroom provides a brief escape, but the memory of Lucas's glare lingers. I grab my bag and head back down the hallway, hoping to avoid him.

No such luck. There he is, a few paces in front of me. I quicken my pace, silently praying he doesn't notice.

"Oh, here we go again," I whisper to myself.

"Emma!" he calls out, his voice stopping me in my tracks.

He approaches, his eyes scanning me from head to toe. I feel self-conscious under his scrutiny and pull my cardigan tighter.

"You think you can just spill coffee on me and get away with it?" he growls.

"I said I was sorry," I mumble, my voice barely above a whisper.

"Sorry isn't enough!"

My heart races with fear. "I don't know what else you want me to do," I stammer.

He grabs my wrist, his grip surprisingly strong. "Are you scared of me?"

I can't meet his gaze."You should be!" he yells.

He releases my hand roughly and stares at me intensely. I quickly look away and rush to leave his side.

Looks like this year isn't going to be mine...What could be worse than this?

I step outside and see Mia waiting for me.As soon as I reach her, I grab her hand, and we hurry away from the school.

"What happened to you?"

"LET'S GO QUICKLY, JUST LISTEN TO ME!"
