A Moment of Uncertainty

"Should I trust you?"

"Why not?"

"I'm going to take a risk." I say, and he looks at me with a smile.

"Get inside."

"Will we be late?" I ask as he looks at me.

"Does it matter? After all, there's a council meeting at school tomorrow."

"Good point, I just wanted to know."

"Maybe," he replies, glancing at me.

I buckle my seatbelt, and he starts the car.

After nearly an hour, we arrive, park, and get out of the car together.

"Where are we?" I ask.

"You'll see," he replies, moving forward.

I look at him and run to catch up. I reach him and walk beside him.

"Just be careful," he warns, and I give him a curious look.

We arrive at a fair with fun rides and various stalls—it's wonderful!

"Seriously?" I exclaim, looking at him with excitement.

"Yeah."

"And here I am dressed for the carnival! Why didn't you tell me to change at home?" I say, and he laughs.

"I'm in sweats too, so relax."

"Yeah, but at least you look good," I say, and as soon as I realize what I just said, my face flushes. He looks at me, surprised.

I cover my face with my hands, and he gently pulls them away.

"You look fine," he assures me, and walks on.

That was the most awkward thing I've ever said. What was I thinking?

"Are you coming?" he turns back and asks.

I run to catch up with him.

"You're adorable when you blush," he says, and I can't help but smile as his grin spreads wide.

We walk and stop at a game booth. He looks at me and says, "I bet I can beat you."

I raise an eyebrow. "Yeah, right."

The attendant hands us the toy guns, and our goal is to knock down some bottles for a prize.

"Go ahead," I tell him.

He takes aim and knocks down two bottles.

"Your turn."

I wink and focus on the bottles. I knock down the first, then the second, and the third.

He stares at me, astonished. I bounce with excitement for winning, and he smiles.

He hands me a large teddy bear, and I hug it tightly.

"You look like a kid who just got their candy," he laughs.

I give him a mock glare. "You better hide, I might shoot you."

He teases back.

I step closer and touch his cheek. "You better be scared."

After three hours of running around...

"Stop running! Aren't you tired?" he asks, looking exhausted.

I turn and see him. "Did we wear ourselves out?"

He looks at me, then suddenly scoops me up from behind, lifting me like a sack of potatoes.

"Lucas, put me down!" I laugh, startled.

"You said we're worn out!"

"I was wrong! Just let me down," I plead, and he carefully sets me down, holding me tightly to keep me from falling.

He looks at me. "There you go."

He winks, and I make a face. He gazes at me seriously, reminiscent of the way he used to look at me in school.

I remember how he used to stare at me like that and wonder why.

I look away, not wanting to meet his gaze.

"What's wrong?" he asks.

"Can you let me down?" I reply, looking at him curiously.

"Not until you tell me what's bothering you."

"That look you just gave me reminds me of how you used to act in school. You were so different back then."

"I'm still the same, it just depends on my mood. I was teasing you earlier."

I gaze at him.

"If you were the same as before, then why are you defending me and bringing me here, teasing me too, while back then you were just yelling at me and provoking me?"

"Is that what you want me to do now?" he raises an eyebrow.

"No, I'm just saying you're not the same. You become vulnerable around me, as if I can control you."

He looks at me.

"Maybe you can control me," he says, surprising me.

We stare at each other, unsure of what to say or do. He still holds me in his arms, looking at my lips while slightly parting his own.

Our breaths quicken as he draws closer, gazing into my eyes and then at my lips.

"Lucas, don't," I whisper, but he doesn't listen. He leans in and kisses me softly and slowly.

He holds me tighter, pressing me against him. After a moment, I pull away from the kiss, looking at him awkwardly, then glance away.

Why did this happen? What was I thinking?
