The next morning, Levi stood at the training grounds, his usual stoic expression in place. "Today, we're starting with ODM gear," he said, holding up the sleek device in his hand. Kat's eyes widened with curiosity and a hint of nervous excitement.

Levi wasted no time. He went through a thorough explanation of how the Omni-Directional Mobility (ODM) gear worked, demonstrating each mechanism and showing how to maneuver the gas triggers and the grappling hooks. He zipped through the air effortlessly, slicing through the wind with precision. Kat watched in awe, her heart racing.

After the demonstration, Levi landed smoothly, dusting off his jacket. "This gear is officially yours now. But," he added with a sharp look, "it's useless if you can't balance upright. Balancing is the most crucial part. No point flying if you can't stay upright."

Kat swallowed nervously but nodded. "Right," she muttered under her breath.

"Now try it," Levi ordered, his eyes narrowing as he folded his arms, watching closely.

With a deep breath, Kat hooked herself into the gear and took her first attempt. She fired the grapples, and with a sharp burst of gas, she shot into the air. For a moment, she felt an exhilarating rush of wind—only to realize she was spinning uncontrollably.

"Ummmm, upside down... Umm... upside down again! Ahhhh!" she screamed, flailing in mid-air, her body spinning awkwardly in the wrong direction.

Levi pinched the bridge of his nose, letting out a deep breath. "Keep trying," he said in his flat tone. "Call me when you can balance upright."

And with that, he turned and walked away, leaving Kat spinning in circles.

Hours passed. Kat kept at it relentlessly, her determination outweighing her frustration. "Come on," she muttered to herself, as she crashed down for the tenth time. The day wore on, and her focus sharpened, until finally—success! She managed to hover in place, perfectly upright.

Excitement bubbled inside her. "Levi Heichou! I got it!" she called out with a bright grin on her face.

Levi returned, his face still irritated, though his eyebrow raised ever so slightly

Levi returned, his face still irritated, though his eyebrow raised ever so slightly. "Demonstrate," he said, gesturing for her to show him.

Kat pulled the trigger and launched herself into the air, staying balanced this time. She held her upright position, smiling from ear to ear. Levi watched quietly, but even Kat noticed the slightest hint of approval in his eyes.

"Not bad," he muttered.

Kat's confidence soared, and soon enough, they were practicing flying through the trees. She followed Levi's lead, propelling herself from tree to tree, the wind whipping through her hair. For the first few minutes, she managed to keep up with him, feeling the thrill of flying.

But then, it all went wrong.

She miscalculated a turn and her balance faltered. Before she knew it, she was plummeting straight down from at least 25 meters in the air.

"Ahhhhh!" she screamed, her heart pounding in her ears as the ground rushed up to meet her. Panic gripped her—this was it.

But just as quickly as she fell, Levi was there. Moving with lightning speed, he shot through the trees and grabbed her by the waist mid-air, pulling her securely against him. They landed smoothly on the ground, his arm still wrapped around her protectively.

Kat's breath came in shallow gasps, but her face flushed as she realized how close they were. Levi, as usual, was unbothered, his face unreadable as he released her.

"Not good... but not bad," he said, his voice steady as he looked down at her, assessing her progress.

Kat's face grew warm, a soft blush creeping up her cheeks from his touch. She quickly averted her gaze, biting back a smile. It was a moment—a small, unexpected connection—that left her feeling a mix of pride and something else she couldn't quite name.

Levi glanced at her briefly, then turned away, his back to her. "Keep practicing. You're not done yet," he said, walking off, but there was a small, almost imperceptible softness to his voice.

Kat stood there, heart still racing, watching him go. Despite the bruises, despite the fall—she couldn't help but feel a sense of accomplishment.

And for the first time, she felt like she might really belong here.
