But then, as she walked down the hallway, a familiar figure stepped out of the darkness. It was Levi.
"Kat," he said, his voice low, almost a whisper, as he stepped closer. There was an intensity in his gaze that made her heart race, a flicker of something that seemed to cut through the shadows of her despair.
"What are you doing here?" Kat asked, her voice barely above a whisper. She wanted to reach out to him, to feel the warmth of his presence, but the memory of his absence during her interrogation stung.
"I've been gathering information," Levi replied, his eyes scanning the corridor as if ensuring they were alone. "There's a way to prove Kenny's involvement. We just need to be careful."
Kat felt her breath catch in her throat. "You believe me right? You're not abandoning me right?"
Levi's expression softened for a fraction of a second, a glimpse of the man she knew was beneath his stoic facade. He softly grabbed her arm and rested his palm on her cheek, "I would never abandon you," he said firmly, his voice steady. "But we have to move carefully. Kenny's got too much influence, and he'll try to turn the council against you."
"I found a letter," she said, her heart racing. "It had evidence linking Kenny to the attack. But I lost it during the ambush."
Levi's eyes narrowed. "We'll find it. We have to find it."
The urgency in his tone ignited a spark of hope within her. "But what about the elders? They're still pushing for my exile."
"Leave that to me," Levi said, determination flooding his voice. "I'll talk to Erwin. We need to rally the Scouts behind you. If we can expose Kenny for what he is, they'll have no choice but to reconsider."
Kat felt a surge of gratitude mixed with anxiety. "What if they don't listen? What if they still see me as a traitor?"
"They will listen," Levi insisted, his gaze piercing into hers. "And even if they don't, I won't let you go down without a fight."
At that moment, the weight of their struggles felt lighter. Kat felt the connection between them—the unspoken bond forged in battle and adversity. "Arigato," she said, her voice trembling with sincerity. "I don't know what I'd do without you."
Before she could say more, Levi stepped closer, his presence enveloping her. "Stay strong," he urged, his tone serious. "We're going to get through this."
Their eyes locked, and for a fleeting moment, the world around them faded away. Kat could see the determination in his gaze, the fierce protectiveness that fueled his actions. But she also saw the fear behind those fierce eyes—the fear of losing her.
Then, as quickly as it had come, the moment passed. Levi's expression shifted back to his usual stoicism. "Get some rest," he ordered, though his voice was softer than usual. "We have a long way to go."
