They entered Trost District through the gates, the weight of loss heavy on their shoulders. The once jubilant crowd cheered for the returning Scouts, but the somber expressions of the soldiers told a different story. Levi led the way, but his usually composed demeanor was cracked, a heavy silence wrapped around him like a shroud. Kat walked beside him, her heart drowning in guilt, too ashamed to even lift her head. She couldn't bring herself to face him, not after what had happened.
Levi, lost in his own grief, barely noticed the world around him. In just a few hours, he had lost his entire squad, and he couldn't even retrieve their bodies. The mission had been derailed by a group of soldiers who unintentionally led Titans right to them, forcing Levi to abandon the bodies of his fallen comrades to survive.
The crowd's applause felt hollow to Levi and the others. Every clap echoed the absence of those who didn't make it back. Suddenly, amidst the murmurs and cheers, a familiar face approached Levi: Petra's father.
"Ah, you must be Captain Levi, correct? My daughter spoke very highly of you." Petra's father smiled warmly, unaware of the fate that had befallen his daughter.
Levi froze, his heart sinking.
"She wrote to me about her experiences, how honored she was to serve in your squad," Petra's father continued, his voice filled with pride. "She said she wanted to dedicate herself to you and the Scouts, maybe even dedicate her whole life to the regiment."
Levi's mouth went dry, but he stayed silent. The pain in his chest was unbearable as Petra's father went on, oblivious to the heartache Levi carried.
Meanwhile, Petra's father turned his attention to Kat, who had lingered nearby, still lost in her grief. He smiled gently at her and held out a small, delicate item wrapped in cloth.
"I wanted to give this to you before Petra saw it," he said, pulling back the cloth to reveal a chain, the very same emblem of the Wings of Freedom that Levi wore around his neck. "Petra asked me to make one for you. She always talked about how happy she was to finally have another female member by her side. She told me you were like a sister to her."
Kat took the chain, her hands trembling as her eyes fell on the inscription. Her name, carefully engraved on the wings, glittered in the sunlight. Tears welled up in her eyes.
"She said I didn't need to go through the trouble of making one," Petra's father added with a soft laugh, "but I wanted all of you in her squad to have one. It was a small way to keep you all connected."
Kat could barely find her voice, her chest tight with grief. "Arigato, Uncle," she whispered, tears streaming down her face.
Petra's father gave her a kind, reassuring smile. "I'm sure Petra is proud of you."
Unable to hold back her tears any longer, Kat clutched the chain tightly and nodded, her emotions overwhelming her. She turned and ran to catch up with Levi, who had already moved forward through the crowd.
