XCVII. WAR IT IS

━━━━━━

"I turned around, there was nothing there

Yeah, I guess the end is here"

AMYCUS CARROW STOOD smugly in front of Harry, who had stepped out from under the Invisibility Cloak moments earlier, driven by a curiosity to examine the statue of Rowena Ravenclaw that stood in the center of the common room. As Harry raised his wand at him, Carrow's fingers had already touched his Mark, alerting those outside Hogwarts—alerting Voldemort.

A loud bang reverberated through the room, snapping Harry back to attention. Disoriented, he raised his wand, but Carrow was already crumpling to the ground. The impact was so severe that the glass in the bookcases tinkled. Harry spun around, expecting to see who had cast the spell; he had thought it was Marjorie, but instead, it was —

"I've never Stunned anyone except in our D.A. lessons," Luna said, sounding mildly intrigued.

"Brilliant you are, Luna," mused Marjorie with a pleasing tone.

"Yes, well, that was noisier than I thought it would be."

And sure enough, the ceiling had begun to tremble. Scurrying, echoing footsteps were growing louder from behind the door leading to the dormitories: Luna's spell had woken Ravenclaws sleeping above.

"Marjorie, Luna, where are you both? I need to get under the Cloak!"

Marjorie raised on the toes of her feet, bringing the cloak higher so that hers and Luna's feet would appear out of nowhere; Harry hurried to their side and she let the Cloak fall back over them as the door opened and a stream of Ravenclaws, all in their nightclothes, flooded into the common room. There were gasps and cries of surprise as they saw Alecto lying there unconscious. Slowly they shuffled in around her, a savage beast that might wake at any moment and attack them. Then one brave little first-year darted up to her and prodded her backside with his big toe.

"I think she might be dead!" he shouted with delight.

"Oh, look," whispered Luna happily, as the Ravenclaws crowded in around Alecto. "They're pleased!"

"Aw, you did them a grand favour, Luna," said Marjorie with a bright smile while Harry closed his eyes, his scar throbbed.

There was a rap on the common room door and every Ravenclaw froze. From the other side, Marjorie heard the soft, musical voice that issued from the eagle door knocker: "Where do Vanished objects go?"

"I dunno, do I? Shut it!" snarled an uncouth voice that Marjorie remembered vaguely was that of the Carrow brother, Amycus. "Alecto? Alecto? Are you there? Have you got him? Open the door!"
