(Micah)
I hurried out of the room, leaving Arlo with the triplets as they played on the floor.
I had some pictures on my phone that I wanted to show Arlo, but I forgot about it.
As I made my way down the hall, I tried to think of something else other than Logan and his fucking confession and Jacob.
Just thinking about Jacob made my blood boil. His disapproval of Landon proposing to me had been clear and I was sick of it.
Who was he to judge? Just because he was the Alpha King didn’t mean he had a right to butt into my life.
I was mated to Landon and now have a kid on the way. Getting married should be the last thing to disapprove of.
Where was he when I was losing my virginity?
I turned the corner to head to my room, but my steps faltered when I saw Jacob standing right in front of me. Of course.
“Micah,” he started, his voice softer than usual. I could see the discomfort on his face, the way he was holding back whatever he wanted to say.
“I wanted to talk to you.” He said, making me scoff.
“Now’s not a good time,” I said sharply, trying to sidestep him, but he moved, blocking my path.
“Please, just hear me out,” he insisted.
“I owe you an apology.” I stopped, my fists clenching at my sides.
The last thing I wanted was to hear whatever half-hearted apology he was about to spit out.
But I was tired of this game, tired of him thinking he could just step in and dictate my life.
“An apology?” I repeated, my voice dripping with sarcasm.
“For what? For questioning Landon's decision? For thinking you know better about my life than I do?” Jacob winced, but he didn’t back down.
“Micah, I wasn’t trying to...” He was only wasting my damn time.
“No, you were trying,” I snapped, cutting him off.
“You’ve been against Landon proposing to me, and I’ve had enough of it. You may be the Alpha King, but that doesn’t give you the right to meddle in my business.” He opened his mouth to respond, but I didn’t let him get a word in.
My anger was bubbling over, and I wasn’t about to hold it back anymore. Not with him.
“I’m done with your opinions, Jacob. I don’t care if you don’t think Landon is good enough or if you have some other issue with our relationship. This is my life. My choices. And if you don’t back off, I don’t care if you’re mated to Arlo, I’ll disrespect you right here and now. Being the Alpha King doesn’t give you the right to control me.” Jacob blinked, clearly taken aback by the force of my words.
For a second, I thought I saw hurt flash in his eyes, but I was too angry to care.
“Micah… That’s not what I meant. I wasn’t trying to control you. I was worried, that’s all.” His voice was quieter now, more careful.
“Worried?” I scoffed, feeling my blood boil even more. I took a step forward, jabbing my finger into Jacob’s chest.
“Worried about what, Jacob? That I’m making a mistake? That Landon’s not good enough? That I don’t know what’s best for me?” Jacob’s face tightened, but he didn’t move.
“Micah, I...”
“No!” I raised my voice, cutting him off again.
“You don’t get to hide behind 'I’m worried' as an excuse. You’ve made it very clear how you feel about Landon proposing to me, and I’m sick of it. Every time you look at me, every time you try to talk to me, all I see is your judgment. Like you think I can’t handle my own damn life!” He flinched, but I didn’t care. I was done tiptoeing around him.
"You have no right to stick your nose into my business. You didn’t care when I was alone, dealing with all the shit that came with being mated to Landon, but now you want to swoop in and act like you care?" I felt a headache coming on, but I was too far gone to care.
“I do care, Micah!” Jacob snapped back, his voice finally rising to meet mine.
“You think I haven’t been watching out for you?” I froze, my breath catching in my throat. Jacob’s eyes blazed, his frustration matching mine.
“You want to know why I was against Landon proposing?” He continued, stepping closer, his tone hardening.
“Because I was afraid! Afraid that he’d hurt you! That he wasn’t ready to be the kind of mate you deserve! Landon often does reckless things when he panicks Micah, I only wanted to make sure that he was serious this time.” I blinked, my anger wavering for just a second.
“Reckless?” I repeated, my voice lower now.
“Yes, reckless!” Jacob spat.
“Landon’s temper, the way he used to abuse you, Micah. Marked you without your consent! I couldn’t just stand by and let you get hurt again because of him!” His words hit me like a punch to the gut, but I didn’t back down.
“You think I don’t know who Landon was?” I asked, my voice trembling with anger.
“You know that I have witnessed that side of him countless times! I lived it, Jacob! But people change. He’s changed! And I’m not some fragile thing you need to protect from him.” Jacob’s jaw clenched, his fists tightening at his sides.
“I’m not saying you’re fragile. I’m saying I didn’t trust him not to ruin what you have. Not to break your heart. You're like a brother to me, Micah; I'm only looking out for you.” I took a shaky breath, feeling the weight of his words settling in.
“He’s not going to break my heart,” I whispered.
“Landon loves me, Jacob. And I love him. We’re not perfect, but we’re good together. We make each other better.” Jacob’s eyes softened for a moment, and I could see the conflict in him. The anger. The fear. But then he straightened, stepping back.
“Maybe you’re right,” he muttered, looking down at the floor.
“Maybe I’ve been too harsh. But I can’t just turn off the way I feel about this. You two are mated, that should have been enough.” I opened my mouth to respond, but he shook his head, cutting me off.
“I’ll back off,” He said quietly, his voice tight.
“But just know… I’ll always be watching. Always.” Without another word, Jacob turned and walked away, leaving me standing there in the hallway, my fists still clenched, my heart pounding.
I didn’t move for a long time, staring at the space where he’d been, trying to process everything he’d just said.
