Mates or just babies?

(Landon)

I watched as Christian lay there, captivated by the triplets. His little hands waved around, and I felt a rush of warmth in my chest.

It was hard to believe that such a simple moment—four tiny beings lying side by side—could feel so significant.

Their giggles and coos filled the room, a symphony of innocence that drowned out all the chaos of the past week.

Micah was practically glowing beside me, leaning closer to get a better look.

“See? This is what it’s all about. He just needed them.” His voice was filled with the kind of awe that reminded me of how far we’d come.

Not long ago, we were just figuring out our dynamics, and now we were here, surrounded by babies who somehow knew more than we did.

“I guess, but they’re still babies, right? They’re just figuring out this whole world.” I said, keeping my tone light, but deep down, I was starting to feel the pull of what Micah was saying.

“Exactly! And they’re already forming bonds. That’s the point,” He insisted, his enthusiasm infectious.

Arlo chuckled from his spot across the play mat.

“This is just the beginning, Landon. You wait and see. They’ll grow up together; it’ll be beautiful.” Arlo said.

“Beautiful, huh?” I echoed, glancing at Christian, who was still mesmerized by the triplets. There was something magical about the way they instinctively connected. It was like a hidden language only they could speak.

“Yeah, you’re a real softy, Landon,” Jacob teased, nudging me with his elbow.

“Admit it; you’re enjoying this.” I shrugged, trying to play it cool.

“Maybe I am. But don’t tell Micah. His head is already big enough.” I shot a glance at him, only to find him smirking, clearly overhearing.

“Oh, I’d never. Your secret is safe with me,” Micah replied dramatically, placing a hand over his heart.

We all watched the babies interact, and I found myself leaning closer. It was incredible to see how much joy they brought to each other, even at such a young age.

Christian was starting to giggle, a sound that felt like sunshine breaking through clouds.

“He’s smiling, look at him!” I whispered, barely able to believe it.

“He is! I can’t believe it! I thought you were right; he’d be cranky all day.” Jacob said, equally surprised.

“Ha! Maybe he just needed his mate's company after all and, of course, a little bit of my amazing parenting skills.” Micah teased, his eyes sparkling with mischief.

“Your ‘skills,’ huh? Is that what you call the way you fumble around when he cries?” I raised an eyebrow.

“Fumbling is an art form!” Micah shot back, his laughter mingling with the rest.

The atmosphere felt light, the kind of easy laughter that came from shared joy and good company.

I never thought parenting would be this fulfilling, but watching Christian thrive in the presence of his future mates—if that was even a real thing—made every sleepless night worth it.

“I can’t wait to tell everyone about this, you know they’re going to be so jealous,” Arlo said, breaking the momentary silence that had settled over us.

“Yeah, they’ll think you're crazy, but honestly? I think this is pretty special” I replied, chuckling.

“Exactly! They’ll have a bond like no other,” Micah said, determination in his voice.

“I just know it.” As the conversation flowed around me, I allowed myself to relish this moment—no stress, just happiness and camaraderie.

Christian reached out, his tiny fingers brushing against Greyson’s hand. The two of them shared a gaze, and I could have sworn there was a spark of recognition between them.

“Okay, maybe it is kind of magical,” I admitted, and both Micah and Arlo shot me triumphant looks.

“See? Told you,” Micah said, leaning back and crossing his arms with a satisfied grin.

“Fine, fine. Just don’t let it go to your head,” I warned, but I couldn’t hide my smile.

In that moment, surrounded by laughter, babies, and friends, I realized that while parenting might be chaotic, it was also a beautiful journey.

And no matter how crazy things got, we’d always have each other—our chosen family, however unconventional it might be.
