Tiny bonds

(Landon)

(One week later)

I was in the middle of feeding Christian when there was a knock on the door. Micah decided to send a mind link to Arlo, saying code red.

I don't know what that means but I would gladly take any help I could get.

Christian was fussing again like he always did around this time, and no amount of rocking or shushing seemed to work.

I glanced at Micah, who was still lounging on the couch, grinning like he knew something I didn’t. He had that smug look on his face like he always got when he thought he was about to prove me wrong.

“They are here,” Micah said, standing up and stretching lazily.

“Yeah,” I muttered, bouncing Christian in my arms.

“I’m pretty sure he hates me today.” Micah just laughed and walked over to the door, pulling it open.

“Finally! Took you long enough, Arlo. We thought you were never going to show up.” Micah said as a joke.

I could hear Arlo’s laugh before I saw him, followed by Jacob’s voice. The door opened wider, and there they were, holding Greyson, Mason, and Jaxon. They were still so tiny, but already making their presence known with little squeals and coos.

“Sorry, we had a bit of a diaper disaster,” Jacob said with a grimace.

“Three babies, one explosion. You do the math.” Micah snorted when Arlo said that and waved them in.

“Welcome to our world,” Jacob said while shaking his head.

Arlo and Jacob came in and for a moment, the room was filled with noise—Christian fussing, the triplets babbling—and I felt my head start to ache.

“Look who we brought to meet their mate!” Arlo said, walking over to where I was holding Christian.

“Mate huh? Already?” I asked, raising an eyebrow and glancing at Micah.

Micah rolled his eyes and ignored me.

“Let’s put them together and see what happens. I bet Christian’s gonna love it.” I sighed but went along with it. Anything to calm Christian down at this point.

Arlo and Jacob gently placed Greyson, Mason, and Jaxon down on the play mat, right next to where Christian was squirming in my arms. I carefully laid him down beside them, his little face scrunched up and red with frustration.

For a second, nothing happened. Christian was still whining, his tiny fists clenching and unclenching.

Then, like magic, the second the triplets were next to him, he stopped. Just like that. His face relaxed, and he blinked up at them, wide-eyed, as if he was suddenly at peace.

Micah’s gasp was loud, exaggerated, and full of excitement.

“See! I told you!” He said, practically bouncing on his toes.

“He stopped crying the moment they were next to him. They’re his mates!” I almost choked when he said that.

“What?” I asked, a bit confused. Arlo, just as excited, clapped his hands together.

“I knew it!  Micah and I had a feeling. Christian’s been crying all the time because he was waiting for them, hence code red.” Jacob rolled his eyes at Arlo so hard I thought they might get stuck in the back of his head.

“Oh, please. Mates? Really? They’re babies. They’re just… babies. Babies calm other babies down. It’s not magic.” I crossed my arms, smirking at Micah.

“Exactly. Delusional, both of you.” Micah shot me a glare.

“You’re just jealous because you don’t have the instinct to sense these things,” Micah argued back.

“Oh, I have instincts,” I said, leaning back against the couch.

“And my instinct says you’re both out of your minds.” Jacob nodded in agreement.

“Seriously. Mates? I mean, come on. They’re all lying there drooling, not planning their future love life.” Arlo gave us both a stern look.

“Laugh all you want, but you’ll see. This is a bond forming, even if they’re just babies now.” He looked down at the play mat, where Christian had fallen completely silent, staring at the triplets with what looked like fascination.

Micah squatted down beside them, reaching out to gently touch Christian’s head.

“It’s like he just knows,” He whispered, his face full of wonder.

“He was so upset before, and now… look at him.” I couldn’t help but chuckle.

“Maybe he’s just tired. Babies sleep better when they’re around others. That doesn’t mean he’s planning a future wedding.” Micah shot me another glare, but there was no denying the smile on his face.

“Whatever. Just admit that I’m right and you’ll feel better about it.” I snorted.

“Sure, sure. You’re right, and Christian’s future husbands are right here. Happy?” I replied, sarcastically.

“Very,” Micah said smugly.

Jacob groaned, clearly done with our conversation.

“I swear, if I have to listen to you two argue about mates for the next eighteen years, I’m teleporting to a different planet.” Arlo chuckled, kneeling to watch the babies more closely.

“I think it’s cute. Look how happy they all are.” I had to admit, it was kind of sweet. Christian looked completely at peace, surrounded by Arlo and Jacob’s triplets.

And for the first time in what felt like forever, there was no crying.

Micah sat back on his heels and gave me a triumphant look.

“Told you.” He said.

I rolled my eyes but smiled anyway. Maybe they were delusional, but seeing Christian so calm and content, I couldn’t complain.
