(Micah)
Three months later.....
The pain struck out of nowhere, sharp and persistent, leaving me breathless and clutching my stomach.
I can't believe how time flew by so quickly. It's six months now, and I was about to give birth.
Fuck Jacob and his stupid side effects for making us immortal. If I could, I would go back to the way things were where I was just an ordinary wolf without a rank.
But Jacob had to come and change everything. Saying that we won't age but we should still celebrate our birthdays like normal.
Once we give birth and our pup is old enough to find a mate, then he or she will stop aging as soon as that happens.
I know it doesn't make any sense, but that's what Jacob told me when things were good between us.
I had barely made it to the living room, stumbling over my own feet as wave after wave of agony surged through me. I tried calling for Landon, but he wasn't there.
“Landon…” I whispered, more to myself than anything, hoping he’d somehow hear me and come running.
But he was gone, and I remembered he had left with Jacob to another pack. They had been talking about demoting an Alpha who had been abusing his position, but I never thought he’d be away at a time like this.
Shit, this is so fucked up.
Just as I felt my legs give out, I heard footsteps pounding toward me, and I looked up to see Logan, his face a mask of worry.
“Micah! What’s going on?” He demanded, his voice urgent as he knelt beside me.
“I...I think…it’s time,” I managed to gasp, tears blurring my vision.
“The baby’s coming.” Without hesitation, Logan scooped me into his arms and carried me to Dr. Carlyle’s.
I could barely hold onto reality, drifting in and out as the pain worsened, each contraction ripping through me with merciless force.
Dr. Carlyle was calm and collected as Logan laid me down, immediately checking my vitals.
“Micah, you’re going into labor. We need to get this baby out now,” He said, his tone firm yet reassuring.
“I’m going to perform an emergency C-section.” I could feel Seff, stir within me. His presence was soothing, like a warm blanket wrapping around my frayed nerves.
‘Let me help you, Micah,’ He urged, his voice a steady anchor. I nodded internally, letting Seff take control, knowing he’d guide me through this.
Dr. Carlyle moved quickly, preparing for the procedure as Logan squeezed my hand, his silent support making me feel better.
I didn't forget about his confession, but right now I needed someone here with me.
I had already sent a link to Arlo and my family so they knew that I was here. I bet they were outside waiting for the good news which eased my worry a bit.
The numbness set in as Dr. Carlyle worked, but I could feel Seff’s energy supporting mine, his strength flowing through my body to steady my breathing.
Finally, I heard the faintest cry, soft and new, and my heart leaped.
Dr. Carlyle lifted a tiny, wriggling baby. A boy, with a head full of dark hair. My breath caught as he placed him in my arms, and I looked down, unable to contain my tears.
“Christian,” I murmured, cradling my son close to my chest. He was perfect, his little fingers curling around mine. I felt a surge of love so powerful it brought fresh tears to my eyes.
Landon wasn’t here, but he would be soon. I knew he would regret not being by my side, but for now, it was enough to hold Christian close, feeling his heartbeat against mine.
I could feel myself healing already. Quicker than I had anticipated. I was a bit sleepy once I took back control from Seff, but I wasn't going to let this moment pass me by.
The door burst open, and just as I predicted, my family was here anxiously trying to get to me and Christian.
Arlo was the first to leap into action as he pushed Dr. Carlyle to the side and started to check on the incision on my belly, but it was already gone, so he had nothing to worry about.
“He's so beautiful! Micah, you did great!” Arlo shouted, making me smile.
Mom and Dad took hesitant steps toward me as if they were afraid that I was going to throw another tantrum or something.
But I nodded my head in approval and handed Mom Christian and watched as she started to cry.
“Such a precious baby. I can't believe I'm a grandmother; what's his name, Micah?” Mom asked.
“His name is Christian... Christian Arlo Shepard.” Arlo froze, his eyes wide as they filled with tears, his face a mixture of shock and joy.
He looked up at me, blinking rapidly, but a tear slipped down his cheek anyway.
“His…middle name is Arlo?” He asked, his voice thick with emotion.
I nodded, smiling through my tears.
“Yes, Arlo. I wanted to honor you for always being there for me; you're my best friend and my family.” In an instant, he was crying openly, leaning over to hug me while being careful not to disturb Christian in my mom’s arms.
“Micah…thank you,” He choked out.
“This means more to me than you’ll ever know.” Everyone burst into cheers and congratulations, their faces filled with joy.
I noticed Marcus and Manny hovering nearby, grinning from ear to ear and looking a little too enthusiastic.
They caught my gaze and burst out laughing, exchanging a knowing look.
“Are you guys high?” I asked, chuckling despite the exhaustion weighing me down.
Marcus shrugged, giving me a lopsided smile.
“Maybe just a bit of celebrating before we knew you’d be giving us even more to celebrate, yeah?” Manny nodded, his eyes twinkling as he ruffled my hair.
“Besides, we’ve got to keep things lively for Christian here.” Dr. Carlyle, who had been quietly observing, cleared his throat, drawing everyone’s attention.
“Alright, everyone, it’s time to give Micah and Christian a little space. I need to make sure they’re both recovering well, and Micah needs his rest.” Mom reluctantly handed Christian back to me, smoothing her hand over his head one last time.
“We’ll be right outside, sweetie,” She said, her face glowing with pride. Dad gave me a soft squeeze on the shoulder before leading the others out, with a beaming Arlo still wiping at his eyes as he left.
Once they were gone, Dr. Carlyle turned back to me, checking Christian’s tiny form with practiced care.
“He’s perfectly healthy, Micah,” He assured me, his smile warm.
“And you've already healed as well.” I let out a relieved breath, feeling Seff’s calm presence within me.
I glanced down at Christian, who had already drifted off to sleep in my arms. I marveled at the peace he brought, even in this chaotic moment.
“Thank you, Dr. Carlyle, for everything,” I whispered, feeling the weariness start to take hold.
He nodded, patting my shoulder.
“Get some rest, Micah. You’ve more than earned it.”
I closed my eyes, savoring the warmth of my son in my arms, and let sleep finally claim me, knowing that when I woke, I’d have my family and Landon by my side.
