Proving our love

(Landon)

The nerves hit me harder than I expected as Micah and I packed up, getting ready to head back to the pack today. I couldn’t help it.

Our time here has sadly come to an end, and it is time to head back to the real world.

I was anxious. Proposing to Micah had felt right in the moment, perfect even. But now that the dust had settled, the reality of what I had done was sinking in.

How was Jacob going to react? Hell, how was everyone going to react?

I knew they all cared about Micah, and here I was, asking him to marry me when he was still so young.

I pulled out my phone, deciding it was better to let Jacob know we were coming. I dialed his number, feeling my pulse race.

“Jacob? Yeah. We’re ready to head back,” I said, trying to sound casual like everything wasn’t about to blow up in my face.

There was a brief silence on the other end before Jacob replied.

“Fine. I’ll teleport you both back. Be ready.”  The call ended abruptly, and I turned to Micah, who was lounging on the couch, running his hands over his growing belly.

His smile eased some of my nerves, but I knew this wasn’t going to be as easy as just going home.

Seconds later, the familiar sensation of teleportation hit me, and we were back. My eyes adjusted quickly, taking in the familiar surroundings of the packhouse. What I hadn’t expected to see, though, was Marcus and Manny also waiting for us.

“Micah! Look at you, man,” Marcus called out, his voice loud and teasing as usual.

“That belly is huge! What have you been eating? We need to cut you off before you explode.” Micah laughed, flipping Marcus off without hesitation.

“Shut up, Marcus,” Micah replied.

Marcus grinned wide and leaned in, throwing an arm around Micah’s shoulders.

“I swear I can’t feed you any more of that weed and brownies, cuz. You’ll get too relaxed and just pop the kid out right there on the couch.” I blinked while raising my eyebrows.

“Wait… weed? What…?” I started, looking from Marcus to Micah, feeling that all-too-familiar confusion creep in.

Micah waved his hand dismissively, his eyes wide with innocence.

“Don’t listen to him, Landon. He’s just messing around.” I hope to the goddess he was. I knew about the brownies and I also remembered mentions of the weed thing.

But every time I asked, Micah and Arlo always brushed it off like it was nothing.

But before I could push further, Jacob appeared beside me with Arlo who was fussing over Micah.

Jacob's face was a mix of frustration and something more. Something that told me I was about to get an earful.

He grabbed me by the arm, yanking me away from the others. I could see Marcus and Manny still playfully teasing Micah in the background, while Arlo continued his inspection.

But Jacob’s expression demanded my full attention.

“What the hell is wrong with you?” he hissed, his voice low but heated.

“Are you stupid? Proposing to Micah right now? You seriously thought that was a good idea?” The accusation hit me like a slap, but I clenched my jaw, refusing to back down.

“What’s wrong with proposing to him? He's my fucking mate.” I argued back, hoping that he would back off.

“Landon, do you even think? He’s pregnant. He’s dealing with enough as it is! And now you want to dump this on him? Marriage? Have you lost your mind?” Jacob’s eyes were blazing with anger, and it took everything in me not to snap back at him.

“I’m not ‘dumping’ anything on him,” I said through gritted teeth.

“I asked him because I love him and because I want to be there for him—for both of them.” Jacob scoffed while shaking his head.

“This isn’t about love, Landon. This is about timing. You’re not thinking clearly. Micah’s been through so much already, and now you’re just adding more pressure.” I narrowed my eyes at him when he said that.

“I’m not pressuring him, Jacob! He said yes.” I replied.

“Yeah, because he’s Micah, and he doesn’t want to let you down! But did you ever think about how much stress this might add to everything he’s already dealing with? Do you ever stop and think before you act?” His words stung, but I refused to let him get to me.

I knew what he was doing. Protecting Micah.

But this wasn’t some rash decision I’d made out of nowhere. Micah and I had been through so much together, and I couldn’t let Jacob or anyone else question my commitment to him.

“Micah’s stronger than you give him credit for,” I said quietly, my voice steady despite the fire burning inside me.

“He’s been through hell because of me, but he’s not fragile. He wants this just as much as I do.” Jacob glared at me, his jaw clenched, but he didn’t say anything else.

Instead, he just shook his head again and walked off, leaving me standing there, feeling like the weight of the world was pressing down on my chest.
