I sat on the couch, looking stressed. I clutched the bank statement in my hand. The kids, KJ, Kenston, Tatianna, Tianna, and Teyanna, sat around me, looking confused and worried, After I called a meeting after everyone went to bed.
"Alright, everyone, I need to talk to you about something serious. I've noticed that money has been disappearing from my account, and I don't know where it's going. I've checked the transactions, and it looks like someone's been using my card without my permission. I need to know who's been doing it. You guys know I don't care if you use my card but there should be no reason because everybody in here gets their own money."
Teyanna raised her hand and I called on her.
"Mom, I haven't used your card. Are you sure it's not a mistake?"
"Yeah, maybe it's some kind of error. Have you called the bank?"
Kenston added on to Teyanna's question.
"I did, and they confirmed the charges. They're all local, so it has to be someone here."
"Mom, I swear it wasn't me. I don't even know your PIN."
Tatianna said putting her phone down.
"Me neither. I don't even touch your purse." Tianna added.
"Definitely not me" KJ said putting his hands up.
I looked at each of the children's faces, searching their faces for any sign of guilt. They all look back at me with earnest eyes.
"I believe you all, but someone is taking this money. If none of you did it, we need to figure out who did. This is serious."
The room falls silent. The weight of the situation sinked in.
"Mom, maybe we should check if anyone else has access to your card. Like, has anyone else been in the house?" Kenston asked.
"Yeah, maybe a friend or a neighbor?" Tianna added.
"I'll think about that. But for now, I need each of you to be honest with me. If you've used the card for anything, even if it was just a small purchase, you need to tell me. But all of these purchases are above $500"
"Mom, we're telling you the truth. Well I know I am but None of us would do that behind your back." Teyanna said.
"Alright, let's all be extra careful. Keep an eye out for anything suspicious. We need to get to the bottom of this. Everyone go to bed, I love you guys"
