Chapter 35 Willow’s POV:

Sammi and I get the lift back up to Mum’s room, where we see Zack still curled up on Mum’s bed. My heart aches at the sight of him; his face is so haunted by pain. Sammi comes into the room behind me and closes the door quietly behind her. She really shouldn’t bother being quiet, it’s not like it’s going to wake my Mum up, no matter how much we want it to.

“Zack?” I ask softly, stooping so my eyes are level with his. They are glazed and I know his mind is far away. I place my hand on his shoulder and shake him slightly. “Zack?”

He brushes my hand off and turns away. I sigh and move away. He hasn’t eaten for days, I’m surprised he’s as strong as he is. Andy has been trying to get us to eat and I’ve obliged just to make him happy. Zack, on the other hand, refuses to. He hasn’t moved and he’s barely slept. I’ve tried to look after myself and Zack but it’s so hard, especially when all I want to do is curl up in a corner and forget any of this is happening.

Sammi shrugs sadly at me. “Don’t force him Willow. He’ll come around soon.” She says. I hope she’s right.

There’s a knock on the door and it opens slightly, a familiar dark haired figure peaks around it. A small lock of hair covers his face but the blue of his eyes still shines through. My pulse races at the sight of him. I can’t believe he’s my boyfriend.

“Is it alright to come in?” Andy asks meeting my eyes. I nod. He opens the door wider and enters, coming straight to my side. Jinxx follows behind him giving me a small smile. I try to smile in return.

Jinxx wraps an arm around Sammi’s shoulders and she leans into him. He kisses the top of her head softly and she closes her eyes, a small smile on her face. I look away. It’s obvious to anyone who is in the same room as Sammi and Jinxx that they are perfect for each other.

My mind drifts to what Sammi said earlier. “Willow, when you and Andy are together it’s obvious how amazing you are with each other. The fact that you got together so quickly shows how compatible you are.”

I look up at Andy as he studies Zack’s curled up figure next to my Mum’s motionless one. I know Sammi’s right, me and Andy wouldn’t have gotten together if we weren’t attracted to each other as much as we are. But it’s more than attraction. Andy and I have been together a week but it that time we’ve adapted a deep understanding for each other. All I need is one glance at him and I know what he’s feeling and I know it’s the same for Andy with me.

Andy looks down at me and a small smile lights up his face. For the first time in days I feel the smile on my face is real.

“Can I talk to you outside, in private?” Andy asks me quietly. I nod and his hand clasps mine. We nod to Jinxx and Sammi before leaving the room.

Expecting to talk outside of Mum’s room, I’m surprised when Andy leads us to the elevator. Soundlessly he calls the lift and we get in. We don’t speak until we get out of the building and to a small park at the back of the hospital designed for family members of patients in the hospital to spend some time away from the wards.

Andy leads me to a small, brown wooden bench in a secluded corner of the park. The park is empty apart from the birds in the trees.  I wonder what he has to tell me that requires us to sit in such a private part of the hospital grounds.
