0009. | JEALOUSY SHOULD
NOT TRANSCEND LIFETIMESPercy had never visited New Mexico before, but looking around at the area, he couldn't say anything about it was too exciting that he would want to visit again. His brain was pretty fried through. He had barely been able to sleep after Apollo forced him into unconsciousness. He was left with a lot to think about, and he knew he couldn't process it all on his own.
He decided to tell Annabeth and Grover about Apollo to help him think.
They had a while to walk from the train to find anything. He figured he would fill them in.
Thalia was walking ahead with Travis, and Zoë was distracting Bianca with stories so they had a good amount of privacy. He told them everything, well, almost everything. He decided not to tell them about the part where the god tried to trade Octavia to him like a football. He figured explaining it would get him riled up again and he was too tired to be angry.
When he finished, Annabeth scoffed. "I knew there was something funny about that homeless guy!" She snapped her fingers. "I can't believe I didn't get that."
Grover gave her a comforting pat on the shoulder. "I thought he was just a nice guy."
Percy clenched his fists. "Well, he's not." He grumped. "You heard what he said."
"Iyah's a prophecy child." Annabeth muttered. He didn't have it in him to even find it funny that she had used the nickname that reminded everyone she hadn't been able to pronounce Octavia's name right. "He told you that?"
"He said she was born because Thalia was." He recalled. "He said she's needed for the Great Prophecy, whatever that is. He said it like... like, she's Thalia's soulmate or something. Like she was made for her." He thought it was ridiculous but that didn't stop the fact that it annoyed him. He guessed it was because it took away any autonomy Octavia had, no other reason.
Annabeth and Grover shared a look that he couldn't understand. He hated it.
"Something you two want to share with the class?" He scowled.
Grover looked guilty. "Sorry, Percy." He placated. "It's just with Apollo mentioning the Great Prophecy and all, there's only so much that we can tell you."
"Great." He grumbled. "I love being the messenger."
"You know you can't know." Annabeth reminded him. "It's not that we don't want to tell you, but we swore on the Styx."
He thought that was a ridiculous excuse in his first summer at Camp Half-Blood when Chiron told him and he thought it was a ridiculous excuse now. He wanted to know. If the Great Prophecy was about him, or Thalia as it turned out, then he thought they both had the right to know what the hell it was about. He knew it was unfair to demand Annabeth or Grover to break their oaths just to tell him, he only wished they hadn't made the oaths in the first place. If he had been asked to keep a secret from one of his friends like this, he didn't think he would do it. He guessed that was the difference between him and his friends, they were always better at seeing the bigger picture, he tended to get focused on the one thing. Kind of like now on their quest. Annabeth and Grover were looking to find the monster Artemis had been hunting and the goddess too, and then Octavia, if all went to plan. Percy just wanted Octavia, the other stuff was an afterthought so long as she wasn't safe.
