0009. | WHAT IS LOST CAN ALWAYS BE FOUND AGAIN
The smell of barbecue was sickening.
Octavia could feel it all the way up her sinuses to damn-near behind her eyes. The smoke was strong and the windows were not cracked and the chimney was not effective for however grand the lodge was. Geryon was cooking as if nothing was wrong and as if everything was going to go his way. That infuriated Octavia more than anything. Geryon should have been threatened by Percy's endurance more than he was. He should have been worried, not cooking.
He was stood at the barbecue, grilling steaks and ribs (much to Grover's disgust), happy with all the smells that echoed in the room. Nico looked starving.
Eurytion was in the corner, lounging on a picnic bench after being demanded upon to keep the group of teenagers in line. Orthus was by his side, sniffing his two snouts in the air towards the barbecue.
Once Geryon noted the Celestial Bronze welded onto Octavia's wrist, and Tyson's obvious, bulging muscles, he made Eurytion tie them up. By their wrists and ankles, they were all strung up like rodeo animals and slung in the corner. After she and Annabeth tried talking their way out of their predicament, the five of them had been gagged as well for good measure.
Octavia had done her best to communicate with her eyes to Annabeth, but there was only so much that she could say. They were both worried. The sun was setting in her eyes and she knew it all too well from the way Annabeth's expression was falling.
Percy's time was almost up.
Octavia sat back with gritted teeth and a tense jaw. Other than a few tickling comments to rile them up, the room had been silent a while bar Geryon's occasional humming. He was out of tune.
She could feel her toe bouncing in her shoe. She wasn't an anxious person. Percy was beginning to make her an anxious person.
He sure knew how to cut it fine.
Her eyes remained trained on the door, waiting for him to appear. She had been doing it for hours. He hadn't come.
Had it been anyone else who made the deal that Percy did, she might have considered they ran for it while they had the chance. A dark, deep part of her always suspected that of people. She knew better than to expect that of Percy. He wouldn't leave her. He wouldn't leave anyone.
Her toes continued to bounce. She stared at the door, waiting.
He would come back, she knew it. She just needed to buy him time. The windows were darkening. Sunset had come. He was losing his chance to be brave for them.
She watched Geryon's head lift, turning to the window to check the state of the sky. A wicked grin overtook his face as he saw the setting sky, flourishing in pinks and ambers as the sun came down on the crest of the hills.
