0017. | LET'S PRETEND
EVERYTHING IS NORMALPercy felt everyone's eyes fall on him.
He shuffled his feet, feeling a little awkward. Everyone staring at him was super weird. It was like being in trouble at school. If he shut his eyes, he could just as easily have been up in front of the school guidance counsellor for punching someone as he was in the Throne Room of the Olympian Gods. He was filled with the instinctive urge to apologise over giving someone a swirly or having made someone cry. He stifled that urge.
The only person who was crying was Octavia. The single tear that had spat from her eye when she spoke quickly turned to more. She wasn't sobbing like he had seen on her before, but she wasn't exactly dancing in joy either. When he tried to meet her eye again, she refused to look at him. Her eyes were trained on the marble at her feet, teardrops falling straight from her eyes, not even off her cheeks.
He looked around for some guidance. No one seemed to know what had happened. Annabeth looked haunted. Thalia looked relieved. Grover was heartbroken. Travis was just as confused as him.
"She should have been advised." Athena shook her head disappointedly. "You have rushed this."
"We've rushed nothing." Zeus retorted. "This was demanded of the prophecy. Thalia was to turn sixteen on the morrow. We had no time to spare."
"This buys us time." Hera noted in a velvet voice. "The boy is fourteen, yes? That is two more years. We have time to prepare."
"So do the Titans." Athena challenged.
"Then what is to be done for the Ophiotaurus?" Ares demanded. "Two years is two years too long in my book. The Titans could easily sacrifice it by then, hold it over our heads, a hostage to control us—,"
"We cannot be controlled! We must kill it!"
"It is a free creature of the ocean! We cannot!"
"Two years is too long to risk! The girl chose wrong. We should begin again—,"
"Her decision is final!"
"She should have been watched closer! Advised as Athena said!"
All the gods were talking at booming volumes. Percy's bones were rattling at the sound of their shouting and he felt his posture bending in on itself to avoid the scattered eyes that darted from all over at him. He tried again to catch Octavia's eye but her body was now completely hidden behind her father who was shielding her from the accusations thrown. Percy was mostly overwhelmed. The one thing that stood out was that everyone seemed to be pretty disappointed his name had been said.
