0002. | HELL HATH NO FURY LIKE THE SUN GOD SCORNED
When Octavia fell off the cliff, Annabeth felt her own heart go with her.
"Octavia!" She screamed, but it was Percy's voice that she heard.
He had yelled the same beside her and the two of them had acted on the same instinct, launching themselves to the edge of the cliff. They were almost there but Annabeth saw the helicopter shift its aim before Percy did, or maybe he didn't care about the threat of bullets. She heard the click of their guns and she changed direction to tackle Percy to the ground.
He grunted and fought her but the helicopter seemed to have machine guns in place. The two of them were left cradling their heads like foetuses on the snow to avoid the tiny holes that were piercing and perforating the ground around them. The Hunters had scattered to dodge the fire and Thalia had managed to crawl to Grover's side to wake him. Annabeth tried to do the same, to crawl to the edge of the cliff to find Octavia but she was stopped by the sound of a footstep at her head.
Despite the snow, Lady Artemis wore sandals suited to Ancient Greece. She faced up to the helicopter as if it were Actaeon and sneered upon it. "Mortals are not allowed to witness my hunt." She announced and thrust out her hand like Zeus.
Under the goddess' command, the helicopter exploded into a cloud of ravens, scattering into the night and smearing the snowy clouded sky.
The Hunters advanced on them but Percy was already running away. No— wait, he wasn't running away, he was running to the cliff.
"Percy, wait!" She shouted and came after him. She was lucky he had got a C in track at Camp because she was able to catch him before he threw himself off the mountain. She grabbed his arm and yanked him back. "Stop! It's too late!"
He didn't understand. "There's water down there, Annabeth! She'll die without me!"
Annabeth wanted to believe him, to believe that he could save her, but something told her that Octavia was not in the water. She looked at Percy, trying to ignore the burning of tears in her eyes. "She's gone." Her voice cracked and croaked. "She's gone, Percy. She's not in the water."
His face twitched with something she couldn't read. Desperation, sadness, anger, fury, despair... she didn't know. Maybe it was all of them. She knew she was feeling that too. "She could be..." he said, but she knew he didn't even believe himself. If he could have sensed her, he would have gone after her, Annabeth knew that. She was certain of it because she knew she would have been right after him.
"Zoë!" Lady Artemis called but it sounded like a curse. "I told you to hold your assault." Her voice was scathing and Annabeth felt a chill through her that wasn't because of the snow.
