0004. | PASSIONS RUN HIGH AND THOUGHTS CHANGE
The Council of Cloven Elders was a group of ancient looking satyrs sat in a circle on some mossy grass. The place they were in was some hidden part of the woods that Percy had never seen before. The lighting was dark but the fireflies roaming around and the torches dotted about on the rooted trees were bright enough for everyone to see. Evergreen and forest coated every surface, even the gnarled roots of the trees were covered in moss and home to bugs and squirrels and all sorts of insects. There was a warmth in the air too, like this was one of the few untouched spaces left for nature, no plastic bottles or littering in sight. It was quite magical to be in and enthralling to catch every little detail like a spider with its web or a rabbit with its babies.
Grover was stood at the centre of the circle. He looked less whimsical and magical. He was telling the old satyrs a story, three in particular, sat up above the circle on three topiary thrones that were too tall for their short legs.
Grover was pulling anxiously at his t-shirt, shifting from hoof to hoof as he told his stories. He didn't look much different to the last time Percy had seen him, except his horns were taller and his acne was flaring up a little. It took him a second longer to notice that, like Travis, Grover was shorter than he remembered. He hadn't realised how much of a growth spurt he had endured over the school year.
Chiron touched his shoulder and began to guide him off to the side.
Percy was surprised it had taken him so long to notice Octavia was stood at the side of the hearing considering he had been admiring the natural beauty of the place. She, of course, blended right in. With her orange hair and glowing skin, she looked more like one of the floating fireflies than any type of plant. Her hair was down her back, tucked behind her ears so her grey streak striped over her head and hid behind her shoulder. It made her look very regal, there was no mistaking that she had been royalty in a past life. She was dressed the same as she had for their maybe-date, in that white vest and long skirt and he tried hard to force himself to focus. Grover was in trouble! But Octavia looked so fantastic, it was making him be a bad friend...
Annabeth, Clarisse, and some other girl he had never met were with her too.
Annabeth had her arm around the new girl, coddling her as she was crying. She looked sick with sadness but that was mostly because her skin was tinged a sort of green colour. It took him too long to realise that this girl was a nymph.
Annabeth was stroking her shoulder comfortingly. She looked up when she sensed Percy and Chiron approaching. He expected some sort of hello after not seeing her in six months, but the second she realised it was him, a look of loyal hatred took over her expression and she dramatically turned away from him.
He glanced at Clarisse instead, hoping for some clarity, but he got the same treatment—a glare and a few cracked knuckles like she was holding back from crunching his head against a tree like an egg.
