0010. | A GLIMPSE INTO
THE FUTURE, A PAST GOODBYEThey rode the boar until the sun had gone down.
Percy's ass felt like it was turning square from riding the racing pig for hours on end. He was more than grateful that it needed a break and a drink of creek water because he felt like he wanted to remember how to use his legs.
"This is as far as he'll go." Grover told them. "We need to get off while he's eating."
"Thank the fucking gods." Travis let go of the tension in his core muscles and fell off the boar. He laid on the ground, groaning into the evening sky.
Percy rolled his eyes and jumped down as well, trying his best not to waddle from the pain of boar-riding. He sat down on the ground next to Travis had gave his shoulder a pat in pity. After knowing his dislike for travelling, he thought the guy deserved a little bolstering for his sacrifice.
He took a second to look around as the boar munched on some saguaros and gulped down water from a nearby creek. The ground was covered in sand and rock hard too. The wind was hot and humid, and immediately Percy felt his t-shirt stick to his back under his jacket. Even in the winter with such cold air, the wind was stuffy and clawed in his throat because of the sand and dirt wafting around. He didn't recognise the area, it was pretty abandoned besides the piles of hills drawn around him to the right.
As he looked closer, he realised they weren't hills at all. He was looking at mounds upon mounds of garbage. It was a scrapheap and a big one, too. The countryside was stacked with old cars and barbecues and old appliances. A rogue shopping cart was squeaking at the joints, wheeling across the sand with every gust of wind. It was a junkyard that seemed to go on forever.
"Any idea where we are?" Travis asked, thunking his head against the hard ground like it was earthing him. He looked like he was going to start making dirt-angels any second.
At his question, the boar, with a mouth full of saguaro, squealed and reared back. It whirled round suddenly and nearly knocked Bianca off her feet. It galloped off into the horizon, heading back whence they came.
"Nope." Percy said. "But I think the pig liked the mountains better."
"I don't blame it." Thalia murmured. She jutted her chin at the junkyard. "Something tells me we're not going to find a car rental here." She said. She looked at Grover. "I don't suppose you got another wild boar up your sleeve?"
Grover was sniffing the wind nervously.
"What's up, buddy?" Percy asked him quietly. "Acorn in your hoof?"
Grover looked over at him. "See that?" He gestured with his eyes into the distance, in the opposite direction of the junkyard. Percy could barely see it but it looked like a few bumps on the horizon. "That's a trailer park."
