As we sit in the car, the engine idling softly, the tension from the night hangs heavy in the air. I glance over at Ethan, who looks very upset. I take a deep breath, knowing I need to address the elephant in the room.

"Ethan, I'm really sorry about everything that happened tonight," I begin, my voice shaky. "I didn't expect things to be like that."

He shifts in his seat, turning slightly to face me, his expression serious. "Lily, it's not just about tonight. I don't understand why you're still wrapped up in his life after everything you've told me. You've said he hurt you and emotionally abused you, and yet you're still around him."

A pang of guilt hits me at his words. "He asked me to be his best man, and I couldn't say no despite the fact that he did those things to me. I'm sorry."

Ethan's brow furrows, and I can see the frustration bubbling beneath the surface. "I trust you, but this dynamic isn't good for you or for us. He acts like he owns you in a way, all possessive while being engaged. It's insane to me! I don't think you should be around him at all."

I look down, feeling the weight of his concern. "I know, but it's complicated. I don't want to hurt him. He needs me, especially with the wedding coming up."

He runs a hand through his hair, clearly struggling to contain his emotions. "Yeah, but what about you? You need to set some boundaries. You can support him without putting yourself in a position where you're constantly dealing with his drama and disrespect."

I nod, feeling a mix of gratitude and guilt. "You're right. I'll talk to him and figure out how to manage this better. I don't want to put you in a position where you feel uncomfortable."

Ethan softens a bit, his voice calming as he adds, "I appreciate that. I care about you, and I want us to be good. I love you, Lily, but I can't be in the middle of this. I'm not asking you to choose, but I am asking you to do better for your own sake and sanity."

His words hang in the air, and I realize the weight they carry. "I will," I promise, feeling a sense of relief wash over me. "I really do care about you, Ethan. I want this to work."

Ethan squeezes my hand gently, and I can see the trust in his eyes, even if the worry lingers. "Then let's make sure we're both on the same page moving forward. We can tackle this together."

"Together," I echo, my heart warming at the thought of having his support. It won't be easy, but I'm willing to try.

"Just remember," he continues, his gaze steady on the road ahead, "that I'm here for you, but I also need to know that you're prioritizing yourself in this. It's important."

I take a deep breath, nodding slowly. "I understand. I'll figure it out. I promise."

As I say the words, I feel a surge of determination. It's time to take control of my life and stop letting Conor's chaos dictate my happiness. With Ethan by my side, I know I can find a way to navigate the tricky waters ahead.
