Chapter Ninety Four: Young Couple to Grow Old Together

After washing her hands, Hua Zhi served tea to her grandfather and fourth uncle, then sat down and waited for them to speak.

She didn't mention that she planned to visit at least once every year in the future. In the situation where they might not see each other often, her grandfather must have something to instruct.

Hua Pingyang glanced at his father and took out a letter from his pocket, handing it over. "I want you to let Fourth Aunt to let my concubines go. They have no children to tie them down, so they don't need to stay and guard the Hua family. You know everything; advise your Fourth Aunt not to make things difficult for them. I don't need them to stay by my side."

"Enjoying wealth and facing hardships together, yet letting them go when troubles arise. Fourth Aunt may not have such a generous heart."

"That's why I'm asking you to persuade her." Hua Pingyang chuckled.

He knew his wife well; she was accommodating but not without a temper. She wouldn't allow separate fleeing paths in times of crisis for the concubines. However, they hadn't wronged him, and parting amicably was the right thing to do.

Hua Zhi lowered her head and looked at the thick letter in her hand. "Uncle, in the end, is it for Fourth Aunt or your concubines? It seems to me the concubines are the ones benefiting."

"A wife and concubines are not comparable. Your Fourth Aunt is the mother of my children and the one who will be buried with me in the same grave. She has no way out, and I won't allow it."

Hua Zhi knew that such a domineering yet affectionate statement would please Fourth Aunt.

Women of this era never expected their husbands to have only them for a lifetime. Having fewer concubines was the greatest respect towards them. Men like her uncle, who only let the legitimate wife bear children, were extremely rare.

Hua Zhi nodded with a smile. "I will pass on this message."

Hua Pingyang also smiled. "I couldn't ask for more."

"Hem." Hua Yizheng cleared his throat softly and handed a letter over. "This is for your grandmother. Zhi'er, be honest with me. How is your grandmother's health really?"

"Why would you ask that, Grandfather?"

"The handwriting in your grandmother's letter is obviously weak, and the letter was written in stages. If she were in good health, it wouldn't be like this."

Hua Zhi neatly set the two letters aside, her tone unchanged. "I can't hide anything from you. After the onset of winter, Grandmother did catch a cold. Physician Chu has seen her, and I had Shao Yao check her pulse. They both said it wasn't serious. By the time I left, she was already much better."

Hua Yizheng stared at her intently. "Is that so?"

"I wouldn't dare to deceive you."

"That's good." Hua Yizheng visibly relaxed. "She has always been in good health. I was overthinking it."

Feeling a strange sensation in her nose, Hua Zhi thought about their arranged marriage that had been dictated by their parents' wishes and the matchmaker's words. After decades of living together, it was hard to tell where one family ended and the other began. A young couple growing old together was an incomparable bond, surpassing any romantic embellishments.

There was a knock on the door, and Hua Pingyang walked over to open it. "Big brother?"

Hua Pingyu twisted his fingers, looking slightly awkward, but he stood tall in front of his brother. "I want to have a few words with Zhi'er."
