Chapter 103: A Blunt Knife Cuts Flesh
The Song family was located in the north of the city, where the Hua family's grand mansion used to be. However, the Hua family was now situated in the south of the city.
Through wind and snow, Hua Jing walked as if she was living through hell.
She was the eldest legitimate daughter of the Hua family, pampered from birth. After marrying into the Song family, she had spent half of her life as the mistress of the house, enjoying a life of luxury.
When had she ever experienced such hardship?
Afraid of others hearing, she only dared to curse quietly. She cursed Hua Zhi for disrespecting her elders, for being heartless and ill-mannered, for letting a junior tarnish her family name, for letting subordinates overstep...
Listening all the way, it wasn't until they reached the Hua family that Hua Zhi calmly spoke, "Such a fine lady from the Hua family has turned into a shrew. If Grandmother were to know, she would be so saddened."
Supported by her maids, Hua Zhi stepped out of the carriage and stood on the high ground, looking down at the pale-faced Hua Jing. "Indeed, I forgot that Grandmother won't be saddened anymore, thanks to your blessing."
"Hua Zhi! What do you mean by that?"
"Exactly what it sounds like." Hua Zhi pointed to the makeshift canopy outside the gate. "Grandmother said that from now on, the Hua family has nothing to do with you. Therefore, you cannot enter the Hua family's gate. But as a dutiful daughter, how could Aunt not mourn for her mother?"
As she noticed the people around them watching closely, a slight smile played on Hua Zhi's lips. "The eldest legitimate daughter of the Hua family voluntarily chose to keep vigil for her mother on the ground, in gratitude for her mother as filial piety. The Hua family naturally agrees. Aunt, please."
Hua Jing glared furiously, wanting to tear into Hua Zhi, but she couldn't do anything at the moment. As the senior daughter-in-law of the Song family, and with her own family being unreliable, she couldn't let that old hag seize any leverage against her. But trying to force her hand like this was nothing but a dream!
"Hua Zhi, I am your aunt. Before you do anything, you'd better think about your future marriage. How important is reputation to a woman, that Aunt has to remind you?"
Hua Zhi looked enlightened. "I heard that our cousin is already discussing marriage proposals. Aunt, think about it. If you get labeled as the one who drove your own mother to death, will our cousin still be able to get married?"
"You are spouting nonsense!"
"If I'm spouting nonsense, why are you so agitated?" Hua Zhi lightly brushed the snow off her mourning clothes. "You can't enter the Hua family. You can only kowtow at the gate. Of course, you can also choose to go back to the Song family."
Ignoring her, Hua Zhi walked towards the main gate, followed by her maids, who were no longer surrounding Hua Jing.
"Hua Zhi! Stop!" Seeing her really leaving, Hua Jing panicked. She couldn't let her truly mourn here; what would others think?
But going back to the Song family... the old hag was just waiting for an opportunity to torment her.
If she didn't uphold her mother's mourning...
For the first time, Hua Jing felt what it was like to be in a panic.
But Hua Zhi didn't even pause her steps. She just watched as Hua Jing walked through the gate.
The wind picked up, blowing icy snowflakes against her face. Hua Jing couldn't help but hug herself, gritting her teeth as she entered the nearby small canopy.
