Chapter 186: Stinks to high heaven
Idle gossip never stays consistent for long, and within two days, rumors have shifted. The voice accusing the eldest Miss of the Hua family of misconduct was gaining momentum.
While Hua Zhi decided to ignore it and shut herself away, Gu Yanxi couldn't stand idly by. He followed the trail and discovered that quite a few people were instigating and spreading rumors, including the Song family, the Feng family, and surprisingly, Chen Zhi and Yu Zhengyao.
The two of them had been pushed to the sidelines by the literati, but they still found the time to tarnish the reputation of their mentor's granddaughter!
Gu Yanxi didn't stoop to their level. He exposed the matter to the public, revealing the despicable characters of the two and cutting off any escape route for them.
This angered the young noble sons of the capital who had finally laid eyes on a new beauty. The Song family had a funeral to attend, so they held back for now, and the Feng family was reluctant to directly involve themselves.
Chen Zhi and Yu Zhengyao bore the brunt of their anger. They retaliated by somehow acquiring dozens of loads of manure and hurling it at the two families' residences, leaving them with a foul stench. Despite this, they dared not step outside, fearing what they might face in public.
But even as the two families reeked of the foul stench, Chen Dayi went off and got into a fight with his two senior brothers. A refined man like him was furious, angrily scolding them to their faces.
He never imagined these actions would tarnish the reputation of the eldest Miss!
How could they betray their mentor like this?
The saga continued.
Zhu Ziwens, the eldest grandson of the Zhu family, held his nose and openly smashed the doors of both families, destroying half of the walls, before leaving in a huff.
No one felt sympathy for the unfortunate souls.
Some bystanders felt indifferent about kicking someone when they were down, as they were not directly affected. But for those close to them, such as Chen Zhi and Yu Zhengyao, who had been taught by Old Master Hua for many years, it was truly disgraceful for them to behave this way during the Hua family's struggles.
Unable to bear it any longer, Chen Zhi packed up his belongings with his family and servants and left the capital. Meanwhile, Yu Zhengyao simply moved to a different residence, hiding away. He did not believe that such a trivial matter would be remembered forever. There would be a time when things would change – he would wait!
Gu Yanxi took the opportunity to visit the Hua family and inform them of the whereabouts of the two men, saying, "They won't be able to hide forever. Finding them will be easy."
"It's best if we never see them again. If my grandfather returns, I hope they will stay away from him," Hua Zhi expressed her wishes.
Gu Yanxi understood her intentions and nodded slightly. Later, he made sure Yu Zhengyao was also kicked out of the capital.
"Miss, your Second Uncle has arrived."
He came quickly. Hua Zhi looked at Gu Yanxi, "I have something to discuss with my Second Uncle. Mr. Lu, please go ahead."
Gu Yanxi didn't want to leave so soon and casually mentioned, "Shao Yao wants some pastries, so she asked me to bring some back for her."
"Nian Qiu, tell Fu Dong to make more pastries that Shao Yao likes," Hua Zhi instructed.
"Yes."
"Mr. Lu, please make yourself at home."
Hua Zhi left the room, with Gu Yanxi following behind her. Seeing Zhu Haodong hurrying into the courtyard, his eyes narrowed. If he remembered correctly, only the eldest son of the Zhu family had entered official service. Many prestigious families in the capital traditionally had gifted members entering official service while others managed the family's businesses. It seemed the Zhu family followed a similar pattern.
