Chapter 126: The Young Master of the Bai Family

It was almost time for the morning hour, and Gu Yanxi listened attentively to the sounds coming from the Moon Gate.

When he saw Hua Zhi walking towards him in a leisurely manner, wearing a fiery red fox fur cloak, Gu Yanxi couldn't help but curl his lips slightly. When it came to punctuality, many men couldn't compare to her.

"Have you recovered?" he asked as she approached.

Hua Zhi felt a moment of imbalance in her heart, but she didn't show it on her face. She simply nodded, "Thank you for your concern, I have recovered."

Not only had she recovered from her grandmother's passing, but also from the exhaustion of her trip to the northern lands.

It seemed like everyone had forgotten that she had just returned from the north and had immediately busied herself with her grandmother's affairs. But this person remembered how strenuous her journey back had been.

Hua Zhi lowered her gaze, hiding the shimmering in her eyes.

"I have to go to class now, Mr. Lu, you're free to go."

Gu Yanxi watched her enter the clan school and furrowed his brow at her slim figure. The trip to the north had already worn her thin, and the recent busy days had only made her thinner.

Thinking about the year of mourning she still had to observe, Gu Yanxi decided that he would send a letter to remind her to take care of herself. With Shao Yao by her side, he could feel more at ease. Plus, he could have Shao Yao bring some good things from the storage room. Hua Zhi never knew how to refuse someone who treated her well, and Shao Yao was one of those people she couldn't refuse.

Gu Yanxi walked towards the waiting servant at the other end, thinking that one day he would become one of them.

As December approached, the days seemed to pass even faster. While the Hua family was still in mourning, they began to make preparations for the things that needed to be done. The white cloth was removed, and the traces of the old lady faded little by little. The transition of power within the family was completed along with the funeral, without causing any ripples.

The three Hua sisters, Hua Xin, Hua Rong, and Hua Ling, visited Hua Zhi more frequently, each trying to outdo the others. This healthy competition was well-received by Hua Zhi, who maintained a balance by punishing those who were wrong and praising those who did well. She aimed to keep things fair, and even Hua Rong, who had expected special treatment, had to work harder.

Despite her strong demeanor, Hua Zhi handled things methodically and did not interfere excessively in the affairs of the various courtyards. This relieved the Hua family members and gained her more support.

Following her instructions and knowing what to expect in return was the best thing one could ask for. While others might criticize her, what the Hua family needed was a leader like her.

Watching her mistress put down her brush, Bao Xia immediately brought a hot towel to cover her hands and gently massage them. Writing for a long time in the cold weather had made her hands stiff.

Suyun Mama gently blew dry the ink on the paper, picking up the long sheet and carefully setting it aside. Hua Zhi never boasted about observing mourning rites, but she never neglected her duties. She would copy the scriptures for the old lady every day and even recite them when she had time, showing more devotion than anyone else.

"Look at how Second Aunt's wound is healing. Did Physician Chu say when she will fully recover? With all those wounds, it might be a difficult Lunar New Year for her."
