Days after that confrontation with Ava's parents, I found myself tossed into whirlwinds of emotions—rebellion, hope, and an unspoken fear of what awaited us. Ava had acted, but the fight was far from over. Everywhere we walked on campus hung the weight of our choices, pressing down on me.
It was a rainy afternoon, and we decided to meet once again at the very café that served as our unofficial sanctuary. The smell of coffee clung around us like an embrace, but tension over the last encounter still hung over us like an ominous cloud. Ava sat in front of me, tracing her fingers along the rim of her cup, lost in her thoughts.
"Do you think they'll really cut me off?" she asked very quietly.
I did not know, I said to her, feeling my heart ache for her. "But I cannot believe they'd stoop so low."You deserve happiness, Ava,"
I said, looking at her as she looked up at me with entreating eyes. "I just can't shake off the feeling that they will do something drastic. They don't get why it means so much to me.".
"We will face it together," I declared boldly, taking her hand in mine. "Whatever they try to do, we will do it with face set against each other."
A small curve played across Ava's lip, but the streak of fear still lingered in her eyes. "What if they try to hurt you again?" she questioned, the glint in her eyes hard, though her voice trembled. "I can't bear the thought of your getting hurt because of me."
I can handle it," I told him, my voice steady. "I'd go through anything for you. Just like you stood up for us, I will, too."
We finished our coffees as Ava's phone started ringing again and I felt her tense up as she looked at the screen. "It's them again," she said, her jaw hardening. "They're relentless."
"Do you want to answer?" I asked, not knowing if it was a good choice.
Taking a deep breath, she picked up the receiver to accept the call. "Hello?" She had spoken calmly but I had sensed that she tensed in her posture.
The conversation started quiet but she shifted her tone within a second. "No, I am not going to let you decide how my life should be. I have had enough of these threats!
And in fact I could see the face change from annoyance to fierce intent. "You can't keep blaming Mia for your own problems. This has nothing to do with her. It has everything to do with me and what I want."
Some minutes passed, and I felt her breathing getting ragged. "I'll discuss this with you when I feel it's appropriate, but you shouldn't look for me to change who I am for you.".
She hung up the phone and sat forward, the shock of the conversation, mixed with resolve, now written across her face. "They're not going to back down. They think they can scare me into submission."
"They did exactly that today," I said, feeling proud of her strength. "That's what matters."
"Yes," she said, firmer now, a determination shining in her voice. "But it's all so tiring. Sometimes I just want to be with you without all the drama.".
"I want that too," I whispered. "But we have to prepare for whatever comes next."
Just then, we stepped out of the café, and the sky opened up, catching us in a downpour. We stumbled toward an awning nearby, laughing at how ridiculous it was. "Guess we are stuck here for a minute," Ava said, the tension breaking across her face, smiling from where it had lodged.
"Looks like it," I said, feeling my heart lift at the sheer sight of her so happy. We stood close, the sound of rain drumming on the roof creating a cocoon of intimacy around us.
"Can we just take a moment?" Ava said, her eyes shining. "To forget everything for just a little while?"
I nodded, leaning forward to press a soft kiss to her lips. Outside, the world receded from existence. All there was, all that mattered, was us—the love, our fight, our connection.
Rain poured in, and the long way before us became clear. But next to me, at least near me, Ava, I was ready to take on everything. Together, we'd weather life's storms in defiant, unyielding disregard for whatever darkness or despair dared stand in our way.
