After an hour of enduring the press conference, where the questions felt more personal than professional, I hated every minute of it. The scrutiny was overwhelming. Finally, as it ended, my father stepped forward and made the official announcement, naming me the CEO of Malhotra and Co.

As people came up to congratulate me, I tried to maintain a calm exterior, but inside, I was a bundle of nerves. This was too much, too soon. The weight of my new title felt heavy on my shoulders.

Then, for the first time, I heard the words I'd longed for my whole life. "I am really proud of you," Papa said, his voice soft but firm. The knot in my chest tightened, and the overwhelming rush of emotions was almost too much to handle.

He turned toward the employees and board members gathered around. "May I have everyone's attention," he called out, and the room quieted, all eyes on him.

"I just want to express my deepest gratitude to each and every one of you—the board members and employees who have stood by Malhotra and Co. through thick and thin. Your hard work and dedication have made this company what it is today, and I am truly thankful for everyone's efforts." The room erupted into applause, and I could see the admiration and respect people held for him.

He paused for a moment, his gaze shifting toward me, a rare vulnerability in his eyes. "I have given this company twenty-five years of my life, and it has been like family to me. But now that I am confident it's in good hands..." His voice trailed off as he looked at me with a glimmer of tears. "I want to announce my retirement to everyone."

My heart sank at his words, and my brows furrowed in confusion. "But, Papa—"

He gently patted the back of my hand, offering me a reassuring smile. "It's time, beta. I should retire. I need to rest."

It felt like the ground had shifted beneath me. This wasn't just a new role; it was a sudden responsibility I hadn't expected. My father was truly stepping away, and I was now the one expected to carry the legacy. The room remained silent, everyone digesting the gravity of his announcement. I stood there, trying to steady my breath, knowing there was no turning back now.

This was too much and too soon for me. I never imagined I'd have to take his place, yet here I was, and now, with his sudden retirement, I felt like the ground beneath me was slipping. How would I handle everything? My mind raced with doubts.

I reached my father's office, still lost in a whirlwind of thoughts. As I grabbed the doorknob, I noticed the door was slightly ajar. I hesitated when I heard voices inside—my father and Dheeraj uncle were talking. I thought about leaving and coming back later, but then something made me freeze in place.
