The peculiar sound of screeching gurney wheels snapped Y/N back into the present.
When her vision finally focused, she saw the sterile white of the hospital ceiling, blinding white lights rolling periodically past her half-open eyes, tears of adjustment prickling her desperation to adjust.
Instinctively, she tried to reach for her face, but her wrists were strapped down to the railing beside her.
"W-what are you doing?" she groaned, trying to swallow against the grains of dryness that parched her mouth. "Where am I?" she managed to force out, still struggling to stay fully conscious as she processed what was happening. The lights were too bright and stung her already sore eyes, their original color appearing back in the absence of her quirk.
"You're okay," The nurse wheeling her down the hall assured, her voice wavering once she realized Y/N was awake.
"I'm okay?" she asked, giving herself one more moment to remember how Best Jeanist had choked her out before she could finish the job. Why?
"Y-yes." The poor nurse choked out, her throat bobbing nervously, hardly able to look at Y/N without cowering in fear. "You just need a checkup."
That was all Y/N needed to hear. Her own eyes scanned over her body, checking in on the pain, accessing it all, and snapping the metal railings within the next breath before anyone around her could conjure a rebuttal.
The gurney stopped, as did all the nurses and doctors around her.
"I'm not going to hurt you," Y/N sighed, rolling her neck and shoulders, eyes immediately locking with a man in a white lab coat standing at the end of the hall. His eyes widened, but he remained still. He was definitely the one in charge.
"Just tell me where the rest are." Her voice was monotone. It was all she could muster, suddenly overanalyzing the memories of what unfolded earlier, the death and pain, the desperation and cold-blooded murder.
"You can't see them yet." The nurse she first saw stumbled out. "Most are still in surgery."
"I don't care," Y/N snapped, her voice rising slightly as the memories overwhelmed her senses, crashing into her with so much force that she felt that same energy swarming in her palms. "Where are they?"
None of them answered her, and she wondered who gave them orders to remain silent. If anything, she deserved nothing but the truth.
"Where's Hawks?" she demanded, louder that time, her fingers growing hot. She got up to move and the doctors scrambled back. One of them dropped their clipboard, and it clattered against the tile, stunning everyone within earshot into silence. The apprehension in their eyes was enough to make her pause, hand reaching for the guardrail of the gurney to steady herself. She gripped them hard to remain upright, her knuckles turning white. They were afraid of her. Y/N's most prominent fear had woven into reality, and she loathed it.
It was too much, this all was–everything was. And despite it all, she was alone. She was the last one standing and couldn't figure out why.
Her skin had no abrasions, and no muscles in her body ached.
"Room 707." The man across the hall's voice echoed, shattering the silent stare-off between Y/N and his staff. Her head snapped to him, and all he did was nod behind him, to the hidden corner of the L-shaped hallway.
