⌖ COURT DAYS BE THE WORST DAYS | O44. ‹ ⚜ › ❝ we, the jury, have reached a verdict. ❞
— JANUARY TWENTY SEVENTH 1O:OO A.M. ᐟ
"Family the deadliest enemy. I been saying that for so long, & it always seemed like nobody was hearing a nigga." Jasiah shook his head, his voice low but firm as he spoke to Spoon. They sat in their cell, waiting for Carter to come get them so they could change into their court attire before being escorted to trial.
Spoon listened, arms resting on his knees, watching the tension in Jasiah's jaw as he spoke. "I know what I'm talking 'bout." Jasiah continued. "I never lead wrong."
He exhaled sharply, shaking his head again, as if disgusted by how predictable it all was. It was always the ones closest to you that cut the deepest. Parents, siblings... & now, once again, he was being proven right.
"True..." Spoon agreed, keeping his words at a minimum.
The scream Spoon heard last night haunted him. It wasn't something he could just shake off—it had embedded itself in his mind, replaying every time he looked at Jasiah.
He had seen Jasiah mad before, plenty of times. He had seen him ready to kill without hesitation. But that scream? & the way he saw Jasiah when he was escorted back to the cell—it was so much worse than before. Worse than the time he came back after finding out about Honesty. This time, it had been the weight from Honesty & Iris.
Everybody was tuned in for this trial. It wasn't just another murder case—it was an event, a spectacle, gripping the attention of millions. The courtroom had become a stage, & the world would be watching, waiting to see how it would all play out. Would they walk free, or would this be the moment their fate was sealed? The stakes were too high.
Since the case first went public, the video was publicized, it had gone viral, spreading like wildfire. People had been following every twist & turn, opinions circling the internet, dissecting every leaked detail, forming their own theories, choosing sides.
Alarms had been set across the country. Some people woke up early just to catch it live, others planned their lunch breaks around it, making sure they wouldn't miss a second. Some rushed home from work, while others gathered in groups, watching together like it was the Super Bowl. Bars would have the trial playing on their TVs, & social media was flooded with discussions.
