Y/N's POV
I lay in bed, Sirius's letter clutched tightly in my hand. I'd read it over and over again, his words haunting me. But the memory of Harry's anger, the sheer worry and frustration in his voice when I told him about the Forbidden Forest, held me back. Sirius was asking me to sneak out again—and this time, to bring Harry with me.
After a long, sleepless night, I tucked the letter into my trunk and forced myself to make a decision. I couldn't risk it, not tonight. Sirius would have to wait. I wasn't ready to go behind Harry's back again.
The next morning, I felt a knot of tension in my chest as I joined Harry and Hermione in the common room. Harry still looked concerned, though he tried to hide it behind a smile. The awkwardness lingered between us, unspoken but heavy.
Our first lesson that day was Care of Magical Creatures. The class was held on the grassy grounds near Hagrid's hut, and as we approached, a few of the students whispered in excitement. It was our first lesson with Hagrid as an official teacher, and everyone seemed eager to see what he had in store.
Hagrid stood by his hut, looking proud and enthusiastic, a gleam of excitement in his eyes. Behind him, a group of creatures shuffled around, hidden from view by large, black covers.
"Right, class," Hagrid greeted, clapping his massive hands together. "Today's lesson is goin' ter be a real treat. I've got somethin' special for yeh."
As he spoke, he unveiled a magnificent, large creature with the body of a horse and the wings and head of an eagle—a hippogriff. Its feathers glistened in the sunlight, and it gazed at us with sharp, intelligent eyes.
"Meet Buckbeak," Hagrid announced, grinning broadly. "He's a hippogriff—proud creatures, they are. Now, pay close attention, 'cause hippogriffs can be a bit... tricky."
The students murmured in awe, and even Malfoy, who usually wore a look of superiority, seemed momentarily impressed. I glanced over at Harry and Hermione, who looked equally captivated.
"Now, if yeh want ter approach a hippogriff, yeh've got ter show 'em respect," Hagrid explained. "Look 'em straight in the eye, bow, and wait. If they bow back, you're good ter go."
Hagrid scanned the class, his eyes landing on Harry. "Harry! Come on up and give it a try."
Harry swallowed but stepped forward bravely, glancing back at Hermione and me with a hint of nervousness. He approached Buckbeak slowly, taking in every detail of the creature's sharp talons and piercing gaze. Following Hagrid's instructions, he bowed deeply.
For a tense moment, Buckbeak stared him down. The silence stretched out, and I held my breath, waiting. But then, slowly, Buckbeak lowered his head, bowing back. A wave of relief swept over the class, and Hagrid beamed with pride.
"Great job, Harry!" he cheered, clapping his hands. "Go on, yeh can touch him now."
With careful movements, Harry reached out, brushing his hand against Buckbeak's sleek feathers. Buckbeak made a gentle, cooing sound, and Harry's face lit up with a mixture of awe and disbelief.
"Brilliant, Harry," Hermione whispered, smiling widely.
After Harry's success, Hagrid encouraged the rest of us to try interacting with Buckbeak. I walked forward, keeping my gaze steady as I faced one of the majestic creatures. I mimicked Harry's respectful bow, and to my relief, the hippogriff bowed back. I reached out tentatively, marveling at the softness of its feathers as it leaned into my touch.
But then, just as everyone was gaining confidence, Malfoy decided to make a show of things. He swaggered over to Buckbeak, ignoring Hagrid's instructions entirely.
"You're not dangerous at all, are you, you ugly brute?" Malfoy sneered, looking down at Buckbeak with disdain. His voice dripped with arrogance, and I felt a surge of dread.
Before any of us could react, Buckbeak's talons swiped through the air. Malfoy didn't even have time to move before he let out a scream, clutching his arm as he fell to the ground. Gasps and shrieks filled the air, and Hagrid rushed over, his face pale with worry.
"Draco!" Pansy Parkinson cried, rushing to his side. "Oh, you poor thing!"
"Should've listened ter me, Draco," Hagrid said, his voice tense with regret. "Hippogriffs are proud. Yeh insulted him, and he defended himself."
Malfoy's face contorted in pain, and he shot Hagrid a venomous look. "My father will hear about this," he snarled. "You'll be sacked by the end of the week!"
The class ended in chaos as Malfoy was taken to the hospital wing, accompanied by Pansy and a few other Slytherins who looked equally outraged. As we made our way back to the castle, I couldn't shake the feeling that this was only the beginning of trouble for Hagrid.
Draco's POV
My arm throbbed as Madame Pomfrey fussed over the bandages, her lips pressed in a thin line. I could practically hear her disapproval, though she said nothing. Typical. Everyone always took Hagrid's side, no matter how reckless he was.
"Serves him right for thinking he could control creatures like that," I muttered, scowling as Madame Pomfrey dabbed a stinging salve on my wound. "Stupid, overgrown oaf."
In truth, I felt more embarrassment than anger. The humiliation of being attacked in front of the whole class, the gasps and stares of my classmates—it made my blood boil. And knowing Potter and his friends were laughing about it? Unbearable.
As soon as I was released from the hospital wing, I made my way to the dungeons, stewing in anger. The encounter with Buckbeak had been Hagrid's fault, but I couldn't shake the feeling that Y/N's expression, that look of pity when she watched me, had made it even worse.
Harry's POV
The rest of the day passed with a sense of unease, and I couldn't help but feel worried for Hagrid. He had wanted so much to teach us, and now, thanks to Malfoy, everything seemed to be going wrong.
Back in the common room, Y/N and I sat with Hermione, replaying the events of the day. I could see the concern etched on Y/N's face, and it mirrored my own.
"I hope Hagrid doesn't get into trouble over this," she murmured. "He just wanted to share his love for creatures with us."
"Knowing Malfoy, he'll do everything he can to make sure of it," I replied grimly. "His father will hear about it, just like he said."
Hermione nodded, her expression serious. "We'll just have to support Hagrid as best we can. He'll need all the friends he can get."
We all agreed, but a weight lingered in the air. I couldn't shake the feeling that this was only the beginning of whatever fallout Malfoy was planning.
For now, though, all we could do was wait and hope for the best.
