A few weeks had passed and Fall had settled in. Leaves were on the ground in reds and yellows. The temperature had dropped to flannel weather. Pumpkins were lined outside houses carefully decorated for the spooky season.
"Adam adjust the hat" Lute directed him.
"Lute I'm trying," Adam grunted from the ladder. "It's not my fault you decided to buy a twelve-foot skeleton from Home Depot." Adam finally made it so the Witch hat was on correctly.
"It was a necessity" Lute looked at the skeleton with approval. "I love Halloween."
"It's alright." Adam shrugged climbing down. "We didn't celebrate as kids and Eve didn't like being scared." He always hated that as a child. It was so hard seeing other kids dressed up in an array of costumes and he had to wear his regular clothes. When he could finally choose for himself Eve seemed to have hated Halloween as well. At this point, he gave up until met Lute.
"Damn really?" Lute looked at him. "That sucks."
"It does." Adam sighed. "I've never Trick or Treated before."
"Okay, that's changing this year." Lute declared. "We are so going."
"I'm way too old," Adam told her.
"So I'll just threaten people," Lute said. "Come on, we have to do this." Lute had to give Adam the best Halloween ever. It was her favorite Holiday, and she loved anything scary.
Before Adam could respond his phone came to life. "Hang on." he answered quickly seeing it was his dad. "Hey, father."
Lute watched Adam on the phone. He didn't look stressed or concerned. His face was neutral. He nodded along and finally hung up. "Is everything good?" Lute was so nervous.
"Yes." he smiled. "He invited us to join him at a football game."
"Oh, exciting!" Lute was dying...

"I'm nervous Peter." Lute sat across from him.It was uncanny to Peter to see Lute nervous. She was a lot of things but nervous was not one of them. "What are you nervous about?"
"Well, I'm going to a football game with Adam's family. They are quite different from what I'm used to. My family is non-existent meanwhile these people keep up with one another and even hug. It's so weird to me." she admitted. Lute had no idea how a normal family operated. She was used to screaming and physical abuse. Not words of encouragement and physical affection.
Peter nodded and wrote down what she said. "Are they kind to you?" He looked up at her.
"Yes." she was happy about that at least. They did seem to accept her. "I think they like me at least. But they liked Eve and we all know how that went down. Maybe they're just waiting for me to fuck up and then hate me." Lute felt like life was going too well. It was only a matter of time before a shit storm arrived and destroyed everything.
"Lute you're not Eve," Peter assured her. "Instead of imagining what can go wrong imagine what goes right. Why do we always imagine the worst-case scenario?"
She shrugged. "I can't give myself the hope of a best-case scenario. I need to be prepared for the worst." She wasn't going to set herself up like that. Failure would be too much to deal with, and Lute hated failure.
Peter went on. "Why don't we imagine what will most likely happen?"
Lute sat there for a second and finally answered. "Adam and I drive there. We listen to his favorite songs. We arrive and tailgate. He will eat a lot." She smiled a little at that. She could see him shoving the most unhealthiest fried food in the country down his throat. "After that, we watch the game. His family will be nice and we finally call it a day."
