In the cool, early morning hours, the grand Jeon haveli was abuzz with activity, but the living room remained quiet and dignified as Dadi-sa sat on her cushioned seat, her gaze sharp and thoughtful.
Before her, seated cross-legged on the polished marble floor, was the village matchmaker, an older woman known for her skill in finding suitable brides and grooms for the region's most prestigious families. Spread before her were stacks of photos, carefully arranged to catch Dadi-sa's attention, each picture presenting a hopeful young woman.
The matchmaker picked up the first photo and gave it to Dadi-sa. She looked at it, squinting a little, but after only a second, she frowned and shook her head.
Dadi-sa- This one's too plain. (she muttered, handing the photo back) Does it look to you that my grandson should settle for just any ordinary girl?
The matchmaker nodded, her face tight with concentration, as she quickly reached for another photo.
Matchmaker- Of course not, Dadi-sa. I only bring the finest girls from the village and beyond.
Dadi-sa examined the new picture, her frown deepening.
Dadi-sa- She doesn't even have a full head of hair! (she said, throwing the photo aside) Is she the best you could find? It's like all the beautiful girls have vanished from this land. Are they all dead?
The matchmaker swallowed nervously, hurriedly shuffling through her stack of photos, looking for one that might meet Dadi-sa's expectations. Her hands trembled as she presented the next picture.
Matchmaker- Here's one, Dadi-sa. Very fair, and her family is known for their respectability.
Dadi-sa took the photo, giving it a scrutinizing look before wrinkling her nose.
Dadi-sa- Fair, yes, but too thin. Does she look like she could bear strong children? We need someone with some strength, not someone who looks like she could be blown away by the slightest breeze.
Frustrated, the matchmaker woman finally reached for a particular photo she had held onto, hoping to present it last.
Matchmaker- Dadi-sa, forgive me… there's one that might interest you—this is Sumi. She's young, well-mannered and she is Tae Bhabhi-sa's cousin.
Dadi-sa's gaze softened momentarily in curiosity, her fingers reaching out to take the photo. She examined it carefully, her brow furrowing as she took in Sumi's delicate features.
Dadi-sa- Hmm.. (she murmured, studying the picture closely) There is a resemblance to my Jungkook's Gharwali… but she is not as beautiful as her, not quite as graceful.
The matchmaker leaned forward, sensing a sliver of interest.
Matchmaker- Yes, Dadi-sa, she resembles Tae Bhabhi-sa, though her features are softer. Her family is seeking a suitable groom, and they are eager to see her married soon. Her parents believe it's time for her to start her own family.
Dadi-sa hummed, lost in thought, just as Jung-guk entered the room, his steps quick as he approached his grandmother. He dropped down to sit beside her.
Guk- What are you looking at, Dadi-sa? (he asked, glancing over her shoulder)
Dadi-sa lifted the photo for him to see, studying his reaction as she presented Sumi's image.
Dadi-sa- This girl; what do you think about her?
Jung-guk's eyes widened as he took in Sumi's face, noting the delicate arch of her brows, the softness in her gaze, and the slight resemblance to Tae. But he quickly dismissed it with a shake of his head, a hint of disappointment clouding his face.
