The first Sawan ka Somwar—a day revered in devotion to Lord Shiva—had arrived. The air was thick with the scent of fresh earth and the fragrance of marigolds, their bright orange petals spread along the dusty path leading to the Shivji temple.
The village women, dressed in vibrant ghagra cholis, their heads modestly covered with odhnis, whispered among themselves as they made their way to the temple, the sound of their silver anklets clinking in harmony with the murmur of prayer chants.
Tae, adorned in a beautiful ghagra with golden embroidery, walked alongside her younger cousin Sumi.
Tae's look
The odhni draped over Tae's head fluttered in the soft monsoon breeze, as she clutched a silver thali filled with pooja offerings.
Her heart beat a little faster today; perhaps it was the significance of the day, or perhaps it was the thought that her marriage to Jungkook, the district collector, was now officially fixed, with the wedding to take place the following month. The thought made her hands tremble slightly as she held onto the thali.
The Shivji temple, an ancient stone structure, stood nestled amongst the peepal trees at the edge of the village. The temple walls were adorned with intricate carvings, and the sound of temple bells echoed through the air, creating a serene yet powerful atmosphere.
Sumi, her eyes gleaming with excitement, looked at Tae.
Sumi- Didi, I'll go pluck some flowers from the temple garden. They say the flowers here are blessed by Lord Shiva himself. (she said, skipping off before Tae could reply)
Tae offered a faint smile as she watched Sumi's figure disappear behind the temple pillars. She turned to the Shivling in the center of the shrine and gently knelt before it.
Placing the thali beside her, Tae gently poured milk over the Shivling, watching as it trickled down the black stone, merging with the water that already pooled around it. Her fingers, steady yet delicate, moved with grace as she circled the Shivling, offering water next, followed by a sprinkle of belpatra.
Once she had completed her offerings, Tae folded her hands, her slender fingers intertwined in prayer. She closed her eyes, whispering her wishes and prayers to Lord Shiva.
Her heart was a mixture of hope and fear, her mind wandering to the uncertain future that lay ahead of her—a future that now included Jungkook.
As she opened her eyes, she was startled to see a tall figure draped in a simple white dhoti approaching her.
