In the heart of the Kim Haveli, the women were busy in the kitchen, their hands skillfully crafting traditional Rajasthani snacks.

The air was thick with the tantalizing aromas of fresh dhokla, steaming kachoris, and crispy pakoras. The gentle sound of frying batter and the clinking of utensils created a peaceful, homey atmosphere. Mrs Kim and Jigna moved with practiced grace, their colourful ghagras swaying with each step.

Mrs Kim- (stirring the kadhi) Jigna, make sure the kachoris are golden brown, not too dark.

Jigna- (smiling) Ji, I've added a little extra spice to the kachoris and even prepared ghewar. The Park family must be impressed with our hospitality.

Mrs Kim nodded at Jigna's words and both continue to prepare the snacks for Park family who are coming to see Sumi as they wish to make her their daughter-in-law.

Once the women were done with the snacks, they walked towards Sumi's room to dress her up.

Sumi, only twelve years old, stood in front of the mirror, her eyes wide with curiosity and innocence. She was dressed in a vibrant lehenga choli, adorned with intricate embroidery and mirrors that caught the light with every movement. Her hair was braided neatly and adorned with fresh jasmine flowers.

Mrs Kim- (adjusting Sumi's dupatta) You look like a princess, Sumi. The Park family will surely be impressed.

Sumi- (innocently) Maa, why are they coming to see me? Is it a special occasion?

Jigna- (smiling gently) Yes, Sumi. It is a special day. The Park family is coming to see you because they want you to become a part of their family.

Sumi- (puzzled) But what does that mean, Kaki-sa?

Mrs Kim- (smoothing Sumi's hair) It means they are considering you to be their daughter-in-law. You will have new responsibilities, but don't worry, you will make us all proud.

Sumi, unaware of the full weight of her situation, played with the colourful bangles that adorned her wrists, the delicate chimes filling the room.

Tae watched from a corner, her heart heavy with a mixture of sadness and helplessness. She saw the innocence in Sumi's eyes and felt a pang of sorrow for her young cousin, who was about to be thrust into a role she hardly understood.

Tae's pov.

Sumi is still a child. How can they expect her to take on such a big responsibility? She should be playing, learning, and dreaming, not preparing for marriage.

Tae approached Sumi, kneeling down to her level. She picked up a bangle that had fallen and placed it gently on Sumi's wrist.

Tae- (softly) Sumi, do you like your bangles?

Sumi- (smiling brightly) Yes, Didi (sister). They are so colourful and make such a lovely sound. Do you want to play with them?

Tae- (forcing a smile) Maybe later, Sumi. Right now, you need to be on your best behaviour for the guests.

The moment was bittersweet for Tae. She wanted to protect Sumi from the path that lay ahead but felt powerless against the deeply rooted customs of their society. She silently vowed to be there for Sumi, to support and guide her through the coming changes.

The vibrant atmosphere of the Kim Haveli continued as the preparations reached their peak. The courtyard was decorated with marigold garlands, and the scent of incense filled the air, adding to the festive yet traditional ambiance.
