A few days after you've returned from your NYC trip with Bruno...

You hit send and lean back into your couch. Looking up at the ceiling, you roll your neck from one side to the other. You close your eyes and roll them beneath your lids. Staying up to complete this budget seemed like a good idea three hours ago but as you rub your eyes you start to regret your decision. After a quick stretch, close your work email and make sure you saved all of your work locally and in the cloud. Just as you are about to hit 'shut down' you phone sounds. You glance over at the island in your kitchen where it's plugged in and your brows knit. You glance at the little clock in the bottom right corner of your laptop.

1:47am

You shut down your computer and walk over to your phone but before you can pick it up, it begins ringing and Bruno's name shows on your screen. You smile, swipe the green button and press your phone to your ear.

"Hey you," you half yawn.

"Baby, hey," Bruno replies then exhales heavily. "I'm sorry if I woke you up." Your brows knit again and you glance in the direction of the phone. As you listen you feel your breathing slow as you focus trying your best to hear if there's anything going on his end.

"No, you didn't. I'm up," you reply. "I was finishing up some work." He sighs deeply. "Are you okay?"

"No, actually. I'm not." You hear some shifting around in the background.

"What happened?"

"I," he stammers for a moment and discomfort rises in your chest but you refrain from interrupting him. "I'm tired. Sleep usually comes easy to me when I'm exhausted but not tonight. When I finally did fall asleep, I had a nightmare. I woke up feeling around the bed for you but then realized I was home." His voice is quiet and not just soft but timid and almost foreign.

"What happened in the nightmare?"

"I don't really wanna talk about it right now," he replies. "But in it, I lost you and I--I was inconsolable." He sniffles and exhales heavily. "I thought about whether I should call you or not for an hour...I didn't want to wake you up. Now that I've heard tour voice; I'm better though." You swallow as the backs of your eyes warm. He clears his throat but you hear exhale softly, they way you do when you're trying to catch you break from crying. You clear your throat as quietly as you can.

"Are you sure?"

"No, not at all," he chuckles half heartedly.

"So?" Bruno clears his throat.

"Y/N," he says. "Can I spend the night by you?"

"Yeah." You hear him exhale. "You can come."

"Alright, I'll...um be there in thirty minutes."

"Okay."

Bruno ends the call and you hold your phone away from your ear and stare at it for a moment. There are very few times you can actually recall of him being scared. Its not to say you never seem him spooked or frightened by something sudden, you have. But this, the way his voice just sounded was different. As you ponder what could have happened in his nightmare, you mill about making your place cozy and lush-like.

After putting on a pot of tea to steep, you put on some warm lighting, put sea salt and fresh flower essential oils in your bedroom diffuser and swap put your cotton pillowcases for silk ones. You also swap your comforter for a weighted blanket and put a bottle of water on the opposite bedside to yours. You ask your home system to play soft music and ocean sounds and then head back you to pour the tea. Just as you are about to have a sip, your phone beeps. You head down the lobby and have Bruno buzzed in. Like you he's dressed in matching sweats but he has a snapback on beneath his hood and a face mask covering his nose and mouth. Over his shoulder is a small duffel bag. You nod to the desk attendant as you head back to the elevators taking Bruno with you. Fingers interlaced with yours you both wait a moment for the elevator to arrive. An empty elevator arrives, the two of you step inside and as the door closes Bruno pulls down his mask. He presses a kiss to your temple and gives your hand a squeeze. You turn at look at him but he says nothing; his lashes are wet and his waterlines show bright red in the harsh white light. His eye dart across yours but you simply stare back unable to say anything. The elevator dings, he covers his face once more and you lead him to your apartment. Once inside you lock the door behind Bruno and he makes quick work of setting his bag aside and taking off his shoes. He takes off his hood, sets his hat aside and looks at you again, the same way he did in the elevator. He takes a step toward you, pulls you close and embraces you. He presses his face into your shoulder and as he takes a deep breath he sniffles and the backs of your eyes begin to burn again. You hold him to you and press kisses to his neck then caresses him there until the tension in his body begins to relax.
