Yeah, I'll see you," I say to Ryan as he waves to me and makes his way down he hall. I head over to my locker, unlock it and start to hang my backpack when a slip of paper sticking off the top shelf of my locker. I reach up to take it and feel a some other paper attached it. I take it down and look so see that its a couple of dollars with a post-it note attached.
Here is the cash I owe you for the last couple of lessons. Sorry for not getting it to you sooner, I was a little pressed for cash. I'll be late to school but I'll try to find you later to set up more lessons. Dancing with you at that party was fun :)-Raine
I count the bills to make sure the amount is correct then I fold them over the note and put them in my wallet. As I head in the direction of home room, I don't see Raine but I shrug it off; I have no reason to look for her, it's not like were close or anything. My mind wanders back to that party and I feel heat start to creep up from my fingertips but I sigh heavily and shake my head. I have no right to be angry or jealous, it's not like she and I have anything going on. My eyes roll behind my lids and I make my way to class.
The day breezes by for the most part and after I make a quick stop the nearest corner store with Tahiti and our friends, I head back to the school to get ready for one of my lessons. I'm only seated for a few minutes before my student for the day arrives. Everything goes well with my teaching of the most common chords and then when once they're able to play them along with me a few times in sequence, the lesson comes to and end, the hand me the cash and they leave. As the door clothes and I take a seat by the nearest open window and lean against it's frame with my guitar in my lap. As the salty breeze blows in off the sea, I close my eyes and being picking at the strings, playing the latest song I've been trying to teach myself. After putting my own spin on the intro, the lyrics form on my lips.
Looking out across the night-time, The city winks a sleepless eye,Hear her voice,Shake my window, Sweet seducing sighs . . .
I riff again on the opening and skip to the chorus and just as I am about to start singing again, I hear the door of the music room swing open. I open my eyes and glance over, still playing but I've stopped singing. Raine stands in the doorway dolled up as always. She smiles at she waves to me but I don't say anything to her. Instead I look back out the window and continue playing.
"That's such a unique take on the song, I love what you did with it," she says leaning up against the frame of the window I am seated by. "MJ right?" I nod but don't change my facial expression.
"You got my note right?" I nod again. "Sorry again for not giving you the cash up front for the last two lessons. My cash flow hasn't been what it usually is for a while but, now that I've gotten it back in order. I'd like to set up a few more classes, if that's alright with you?" I set my guitar aside against the wall but stay seated.
"Are you going to give me the money up front this time? Late payments aren't gonna cut it. Everyone else pays on time, you should to." Raine sets her bag down on the window sill opposite me and starts rummaging through it. She soon produces her wallet from which he pulls a crisp twenty dollar bill and hands it to me. I raise my eyebrows at her. She grabs one of my hand, places the twenty inside and closes my hand over it.
