It was a foggy morning. The skyscrapers could barely be seen in the foggy March morning. Lucas stood in front of the wall size window in his penthouse and watched the view, drinking his black coffee, while he was still shirtless in just his sweats. It was a cold morning which is why he put the heater up so he didn't have to put on a shirt. He hated putting on a shirt.
Watching the fog move and settle in, a lot of things ran through his mind. All of those things had to do with Zoe. It was a mystery how much time had gone by yet he still could not get her out of his mind. Sure, she wasn't in close proximity to him, but he still felt connected to her, like it was only yesterday their lips collided. Thinking about the fact that he had not seen her in four months, brought some sort of sorrow to his heart that he wasn't sure he was capable of. Stop feeling like this! He would scold himself.
Slowly, he sipped his coffee and continued to stare out the window. It was his thinking time. So he thought. Yes, he thought about Zoe, but there were other things that he thought of quite often. The first thing that he thought of every morning was the reason he woke up in the first place. The reason he woke up was because of that day that changed his life. And every morning, he relieved that day.
That day started out like any other summer day. Sunny, calm, and with Lucas having so much money in the bank that he didn't know what to do with it. He was only eighteen at that time and had never worked a day in his life, but his parents spoiled him to the point that he was richer than most adults would ever be. He went about his day the same way that most eighteen year olds do: talking with friends, hooking up with girls left and right, and having fun before the summer college started. That day, Lucas and his friends were supposed to go camping. But his father had insisted that Lucas take his personal security guard with him to keep him safe. If he didn't take him along, Lucas would not be allowed to go. Lucas was promised that the security guard would stay far away and none of his friends would know because who wants to tell people that they're being watched 24/7.
On the drive to the cabin, it was just Lucas and the guard, they stopped to get gas at a random gas station. But when they went through those doors, everything changed.
Lucas pictured in his mind the drinks aisle he was standing in, humming along to the song that was playing on the speaker. Out of nowhere, he heard loud noises, like a gun going off. The bodyguard quickly pushed Lucas to the ground and made him crawl until they reached the door that said employees only. They went in that door and the guard got his gun ready.
While they were safe in the room, they heard multiple other rounds being fired. Lucas was beyond petrified. He kept his hands to his ear to make it stop. All he felt was fear. Fear of dying.
But the more rounds were fired, the more indignant he got. He knew he couldn't go out there; he didn't know how to save the day, and he sure as hell didn't know anything about guns. So he turned to the security guard, "You have to go help them."
"My job is to keep you safe. Not anyone else."
The shots stopped before another one was heard. "You need to help those people!"
The guard didn't reply. The next thing they heard wasn't shots but sirens. And when they heard police talking in the gas station, that is when they knew it was safe to come out.
"Stay here."
Lucas was beyond scared. But he was also furious at the security guard for not helping those people. The guard opened the door slowly with the gun in his hand, ready to shoot anyone and anything that got in the way of his assignment.
Is he mentally challenged? Lucas asked about the man who looked like a stone, cold being.
"It's clear."
